The 2009 season for the most recognizable franchise in professional football was a rollercoaster ride that ended with everyone throwing up and feeling nauseous.

In mid-December, the Cowboys were in deep trouble. They had just lost back-to-back games against the New York Giants and San Diego, and with an 8-5 mark, they journeyed to New Orleans to take on the 13-0 Saints.

Few people thought Dallas would emerge from that game alive, so the prospect of an 8-6 record seemed likely. Given that the NFC’s sixth seed (the lowest seed in each set of conference playoffs) finished with an 11-5 record in 2009, it was imperative that Dallas win in the Big Easy.

A setback probably would have kept owner Jerry Jones’s team out of the postseason for a second straight year, and coach Wade Phillips surely would have been fired. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

But then the remarkable happened. Dallas played a supremely gutsy game and, behind the pass rushing of defensive end DeMarcus Ware, smothered the Saints’ high-powered passing attack. Drew Brees and the rest of the Saints could never get going. On a night when Dallas kicker Nick Folk missed an easy field goal attempt, the Cowboys’ defense made sure that gaffe didn’t matter.

Ware and Co. remained in control for the duration, holding off a final New Orleans charge in the closing moments en route to a 24-17 victory.

Transformed by the unexpected triumph, Dallas rolled through Washington and Philadelphia to win the NFC East, and after waxing Philly again in the NFC Wild Card Game, the Cowboys entered the NFC Divisional Playoffs with a full head of steam.

Their game at Minnesota was viewed as a fairly even battle. Yet, just when people were beginning to talk about the Cowboys as a Super Bowl threat, the Vikings handed them a humiliating 34-3 loss.

In 2010, optimism runs high in Big D. The Cowboys have a lot of young horses on both sides of the ball. Ware leads a fire-breathing defense and will continue to generate a fierce pass rush. Quarterback Tony Romo has a number of tall, rangy wide receivers to throw to, a list of which now includes first-round draftee Dez Bryant.

The main concerns for Dallas lie with the offense. First of all, the offensive line has undergone some changes.

Doug Free is in at left tackle, while five-time Pro Bowl selection Flozell Adams, a distinguished 12-year veteran, is out. That’s going to be a huge focus for Dallas this year, since left tackle is arguably the single most important position in the league for any team with a righty quarterback.

The other concern is the quarterback position itself. Romo frequently shows signs of brilliance during the regular season, and he was excellent against Philadelphia last year (in three games against the Eagles, not just one).

Romo has guided the Cowboys to the second round of the playoffs on multiple occasions, so it’s not as though he isn’t capable of delivering considerable quality.

However, he’s never been able to get to the NFC Championship Game despite being surrounded with solid talent. Romo gets jittery in very big games and becomes a panicky presence in the pocket.

If Romo becomes a steadier and less volatile signal caller, Dallas just might take the next step.

Cowboys 2010 Outlook

The predicted finish for this team will not be the Super Bowl, but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the Cowboys got over the hump. Minnesota, though, will probably have too much for Dallas in the NFC Championship Game.
