Cowboys

The Cowboys come into week three without a win, having played their first two games on the road. Miami will enjoy the comforts of home for the first time this preseason after splitting their first two games between Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

Tony Romo was efficient for the Cowboys last week against the Ravens, firing 4/5 through the air for 80 yards and a 31 yard TD to his number one receiver Dez Bryant.

Romo was however, still Tony Romo, and cost his team early with a fumble that was returned 26 yards for a Ravens TD less than four minutes into the game.

Cowboys’ number two QB Brandon Weeden was anything but impressive, taking the lion’s share of snaps under centre last week, going 10 for 19 for 129 yards and was the only Dallas QB not to find a receiver for a TD; he was also sacked once and tossed one INT.

Dolphins

The Dolphins edged their first win of the preseason last week against the Bucs 20-14 and did it mostly through the air with QBs Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore accounting for 22 completions on 33 attempts and racking up nearly 270 yards and a TD thrown by Moore to Rishard Matthews.

On the ground against Tampa, the Dolphins were anemic, running the ball 26 times for a mere 46 yards (1.8 yds/carry).

Look for Miami to try to establish their run game this week against a Cowboys defense that has given up over 150 yards on the ground in each of its first two preseason games.

Conversely, the Dolphins have managed to convert just six rushing first downs in their first two games of the preseason, so something has to give this week.

Dolphins’ number one running back Knowshon Moreno is still nursing a knee ailment and touches will likely be split between Lamar Miller, Daniel Thomas and Damien Williams, none of which has had a stellar preseason to this point.

On the offensive side of the ball for the Cowboys, look for Romo to see a bit more playing time this week and with just two preseason games remaining, the regulars should be seeing a few more reps on Saturday.

Miami’s secondary was opened up for over 280 yards through the air in their week one loss to the Atlanta Falcons, with Atlanta signal caller Matt Ryan going 7/7 for 53 yards.

The Dolphins clamped down in preseason week two against the pass attack of Tampa Bay, but shutting down QBs Mike Glennon and Mike Kafka is hardly worth writing home about.

Expect Romo to do much of the same of what Matt Ryan did against the Dolphins, and if Tony takes the field for four or five series, he will find Bryant early and often and for a couple of scores.

Dolphins vs Cowboys Free Pick

I’m going with the Cowboys to get their first win of the preseason this week over Miami. Tony Romo and the Cowboys’ offense should be able to mount enough of an early lead and sustain it through to the finish.

Miami has proven that they can sling the ball about the field through the air, but with no established running game I expect them to take the opportunity to get their running backs some reps against a Dallas defense that has been chewed up on the ground.
