Chicago Bears (3-1)

The Chicago Bears were pretenders at 3-0. In Week 1, they got a gift when a blown call cancelled Detroit’s winning touchdown against them in the dying seconds. In Week 3. The Green Bay Packers handed them a win by committing 18 penalties.

The Bears fielded a legitimately strong passing attack with Jay Cutler under center and “Mad” Mike Martz calling the plays over those first three weeks. They also did a great job stopping the run. But their shortcomings finally caught up to them in Week 4’s disastrous loss to the New York Giants.

The Bears allowed 10 total sacks – nine of which came on Cutler in the first half. He left the game with a concussion and has been ruled out for this weekend’s game at Carolina. The Bears’ horrific offensive line is perhaps the worst in the NFL. Cutler’s mobility at least helped him buy time to make plays but backup Todd Collins won’t bail out the line as often. It looks like the Bears will really struggle to pass the ball this weekend.

Come to think of it, they may not run the ball well either. They average an NFC-worst 68.8 rushing yards per game; Matt Forte can’t seem to find a hole and, when he does, he can’t hit it with enough steam.

We haven’t even touched on Carolina yet but it should already be fairly clear that you should bet UNDER the total of 33 this week.

Carolina Panthers (0-4)

The Carolina Panthers don’t have a win yet but they at least drew some positives from last week’s 16-14 loss to New Orleans. They held the Saints to a respectable 262 passing yards. They ran for 118 net yards, averaging 5.1 yards per rush. DeAngelo Williams finally got going on the ground, running for 86 yards and a score on 13 carries, and his buddy Jonathan Stewart found pay dirt on a 55-yard catch.

Quarterback Jimmy Clausen also survived. He threw for only 146 yards and a touchdown but didn’t turn over the ball. That’s all Carolina can really ask for at this point.

Clausen should have a tougher time against an aggressive Bears “D” this week. Julius Peppers should be a man possessed playing against his former team; I expect multiple sacks from him.

The pick:

Go ahead and bet on this game but do yourself a favor and don’t watch it. It should be very, very ugly. The Bears won’t move the ball with Todd Collins starting behind a brutal O-line on the road. The Panthers could struggle too with a rookie quarterback facing an experienced “D.” The Bears should also have no problem stacking the box against Williams and Stewart since they won’t have to respect Clausen. Remember, Steve Smith is also out with high ankle sprain.

Since the Panthers are at home, can at least move the chains on the ground and aren’t starting a 38-year old quarterback, I’ll lean their way. But this will be a grubby, low-scoring game.

Chicago at Carolina Gambling Trends:

The total has gone UNDER in 13 of Chicago’s last 19 games on the road
Chicago is 4-9 ATS in its last 13 games
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Carolina’s last 5 games at home

Chicago is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games
The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Chicago’s last 12 games
Carolina is 13-6 SU in its last 19 games at home
Carolina is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games

Bears vs Panthers prediction: Panthers 14, Bears 6
