Carolina Panthers vs. Indianapolis Colts Preview

Things just keep getting worse for the winless Colts (0-10) and with each loss the question gets bigger, as what will happen if they get the first pick in the draft? Will they take Andrew Luck and what will happen when Peyton Manning gets healthy? NFL lines have the Panthers as 3-point away favorites with a total of 45.

In their last games the panthers lost to the Detroit Lions 49-35 and the Colts are coming off a bye week and the previous week they lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars 17-3.

Cam Newton has played solid under center in his rookie campaign, but that has not translated into wins.

With Manning out it has simply killed the Colts and since Curtis Painter took over the starting duties, with Kerry Collins lost for the season, he has only completed 55.2% of his passes with 5 TD’s and 7 INT’s. Painter has no passing TD’s in his last 5 games. It’s not as if the Colts can fall back on running the ball, as they only rank 24th in the league in rushing yards per game.

There may be a chance that Painter and the struggling Colts’ offense can get back on track in this game, as the Panthers only rank 17th in the league in pass defense and 30th in run defense. Last week they were outscored 35-8 in the 2nd half in the loss to the Lions and in their last 2 games they have given up 79 points. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The offense has not been the problem for the Panthers, as Newton leads the team’s 8th ranked passing offense and 7th ranked rushing offense. He has a big play WR in Steve Smith, who ranks 3rd in the league in receiving yards. The Colts’ pass defense only ranks 23rd in the league.

Newton is the 2nd leading rusher for the Panthers and while leading rusher DeAngelo Williams has not rushed for over 100 yards in 5 straight games he and Newton will be facing a Colts’ run defense that ranks 2nd to last in the league.

Betting Trends

The Panthers are 5-5 ATS and have an O/U record of 6-4 and the Colts are 2-8 ATS and have an O/U record of 6-4.

The Panthers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 road games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games, and have an Over record of 6-2-1 in their last 9 road games.

The Colts are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games, 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games, and have an Under record of 6-2 in their last 8 games as a home underdog.

Jason’s Pick: The Panthers’ defense has major issues, but they have the offense and will win and cover facing a weak Colts’ team that has issues on both sides of the ball. Since each team does not have a good D take the Over in this non-conference match up.
