Monday Night Football Pick – Week 6

The NFL odds of the Broncos arriving for their Week 6 Monday Nighter undefeated seemed next to impossible before the season started, yet here we are. Baby-faced Josh McDaniels has his boys playing phenomenal football; first the “D” dominated and now the offense is catching up. Can Denver keep its improbable run going in San Diego tonight?

Denver Broncos @ San Diego Chargers (-3.5)
Tonight, 8:35 p.m. ET

The Chargers have a major opportunity to make a statement tonight after playing inconsistently through their first four games. They looked solid enough in wins over weaker teams like Oakland and Miami but couldn’t keep pace with Baltimore or Pittsburgh. The Chargers need to prove they can hang with elite teams if they want to stay in the playoff picture.

Throwing the ball is just about the only thing San Diego does well so far this season. While I expect a great game – even a classic – I don’t expect Favre and the Packers to come out on top. The LaDainian Tomlinson era is over; this is Phillip Rivers’ team and he’s flourishing as the offensive focal point. He spreads the ball around, hitting big targets like Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson while also making good use of pass-catching backs like Darren Sproles. It’s thus no surprise that the Chargers average 295.5 passing yards per game, good for third in the NFL.

However, to say San Diego can’t run the ball is a huge understatement. The Chargers average just 53.8 rushing yards per game, easily the NFL’s lowest mark. Tomlinson is as good as done as a featured back – if he was a horse, he’d be retired from the racebook and off to the glue factory. Sproles is explosive but the Chargers have no strong between-the-tackles runner anymore. Against the Broncos’ fourth-ranked run defense, it’s hard to imagine the Chargers’ problem disappearing tonight.

While the Chargers may have trouble moving the ball on the Broncos tonight, the reverse may not be true. Denver averages 139 rushing yards per game, sixth-most in the league. Knowshon Moreno is sliding into starting duty gradually and effectively; chances are he can gash the Chargers’ run “stopping” unit, which allows 151 yards per game.

San Diego defends the pass reasonably enough but it may not matter; even if Kyle Orton doesn’t find Brandon Marshall for a big play (but he will), Denver’s running game and stingy defense will combine to top San Diego. Rivers is a great quarterback but the Broncos held Tony Romo and Tom Brady to 255 and 215 yards, respectively, in Weeks 4 and 5. They can handle Rivers too.

Believe it or not, these Broncos are the real deal. Make them your Monday NFL picks.

While I’m tired of betting against the Broncos every week and losing, but in tonights game I have to do it one more time.

The Chargers are in a must win situation playing at home. If they lose this game you might as well as hand the AFC West title to Denver.
