NFL Divisional Previews – 2011 AFC East Betting Breakdown

The 2011-2012 NFL season is looming but unfortunately so is the unfortunate Lockout. The eternal optimist that I am, I have compiled odds and predictions for each division in the knowledge that the owners and the players cannot be as ridiculous as they look.

The Patriots and the Jets are obvious front runners in the AFC East going into the season to nobody’s surprise. Both teams are talent latent and both have some of the best football minds patrolling the sidelines.

So who wins the AFC East?

New England Patriots

Odds To Win AFC East -125
Odds To Win Super Bowl +600

As long as Tom Brady is under center in New England, they will be favored in the AFC East. Sure the Pats defense may give up 21 points but rest assured that the offense will score 30! Unfortunately for fans, the Pats missed a huge opportunity to address their defensive issues in the draft.

Six of seven picks went to shore up an offense that led the NFL in scoring last year, while the struggling defense was largely ignored.

Still when all is said and done, in a quarterback driven league, who would you rather have? Tom Brady or Mark Sanchez?

Patriots AFC East Prediction: Pats finish 12-4 and take the AFC East

New York Jets

Odds To Win AFC East +150
Odds To Win Super Bowl +1200

Because we are talking Regular Season success, the Jets take a back seat to the Patriots again this season. If this were playoffs, it may be the other way around. New York improved from a 9-7 team to an 11-5 team last season thanks largely to an incredible defense. That should be the strength of the team again – it’s a good thing!

Mark Sanchez appears to be one of those quarterbacks that is prone to slumps. With uncertainty at the Wide Receiver position and a cloudy Free Agency situation in Jets-land, it is difficult to see the Jets overtaking their arch-nemesis this season.

New York did improve in the draft and they do have one of the best motivators in the NFL at Head Coach but they still appear to be a year away.

Jets AFC East Prediction: Look for an 11-5 finish, a playoff spot but no AFC East crown. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Miami Dolphins

Odds To Win AFC East +600
Odds To Win Super Bowl +4000

Miami appears destined for yet another .500 or so season this season. Although they did address some serious issues in the draft (the 21st ranked running game) – mostly on the offensive side of the ball. Still with Chad Henne running the show, they simply don’t have enough offense to challenge the big boys in the division.

Expect the Fins to slide as per usual when the weather starts getting cold and to finish third once again!

Dolphins AFC East Prediction: 8-8 and a third place finish would be a victory.

Buffalo Bills

Odds To Win AFC East +1500
Odds To Win Super Bowl +20000

The Bills looked competitive last season but to think that they are ready to take the next step is a pipe dream. The Bills had a very good draft and were able to fill holes on what was an absolutely brutal run defense last season (170 yards rushing allowed). With Ryan Fitzpatrick behind center, expect improvement but that’s about it.

Bills AFC East Prediction: A .500 season would be a success but a 7-9 season is more likely!

This division is a 2-dog-fight. Jets vs. Pats. We BETTER HAVE football this year. I love this rivalry.
