Take a look at the current situation in the AFC West. It was only a month ago the Broncos walked into Qualcomm Stadium and defeated the Chargers 34-23 as 3.5-point underdogs. The win lifted Denver to a perfect 6-0 both in the standings and at the window, and put them 3.5 games up on San Diego in the division.

Times have changed for the Broncos and Chargers. With both teams headed in opposite directions for bettors, first place in the AFC West is on the line on Sunday afternoon at Invesco Field at Mile High.

San Diego at Denver (OFF) – 4:15 PM ET

With Kyle Orton’s status uncertain, oddsmakers have taken the line and total off the board for Sunday’s showdown between the Chargers (6-3, 4-5 ATS) and Broncos (6-3, 6-3 ATS).

Orton left at the end of the first half in Denver’s 27-17 loss at Washington (+3.5) last week because of a sprained left ankle, and didn’t return. Without Orton, the Broncos dropped their third straight game (0-3 ATS) to fall into a tie with the Bolts for top spot in the AFC West. If Orton can’t play on Sunday, Denver would be forced to start Chris Simms under center.

San Diego has won four in a row (3-1 ATS) since losing to Denver on October 19. If Simms gets the call at quarterback for the Broncos, expect the Chargers to be slight favorites by kickoff on Sunday.

Cincinnati at Oakland (+9.5, 36) – 4:15 PM ET

Speaking of issues at quarterback, the Raiders (2-7, 4-5 ATS) are expected to start Bruce Gradkowski when they tackle the surging Bengals (7-2, 6-3 ATS) at Mount Davis on Sunday.

JaMarcus Russell has finally been benched for good after throwing for only two touchdowns to go along with nine interceptions this season. Gradkowski strained his hamstring in relief of Russell in Oakland’s 16-10 loss against Kansas City (-1) last week, but he’s getting the call anyway.

Cincinnati is riding high atop the AFC North with wins in seven of its last eight games (6-2 ATS). Cedric Benson (hip) left the Bengals’ 18-12 win as 6.5-point pups at Pittsburgh last Sunday, but he’s likely to take the field against the Raiders. For insurance, Cincy signed former Kansas City running back Larry Johnson earlier this week.

Washington at Dallas (-11, 41.5) – 1 PM ET

The Redskins (3-6, 2-6-1 ATS) should be without their two best players when they clash with the Cowboys (6-3, 5-4 ATS) on Sunday in Dallas.

Things might change when the official injury report comes out on Friday, but defensive end Albert Haynesworth (ankle) and running back Clinton Portis (concussion) are expected to be questionable and doubtful, respectively, for Sunday’s contest.

With both studs banged up, Washington will lean all the more on its top-ranked pass defense, which should get a boost with right tackle Mark Columbo (leg) out for Dallas. Left tackle Flozell Adams (ankle) and Marion Barber (thumb) are also nicked up following the Cowboys’ 17-7 loss at Green Bay (+3) last week, but both should be in the lineup on Sunday.

San Francisco at Green Bay (-6.5, 41.5) – 1 PM ET

You might not like the 49ers’ (4-5, 6-2-1 ATS) chances of winning outright at Lambeau Field on Sunday, but you have to lean towards them against the NFL point spread for their battle with the Packers (5-4, 5-4 ATS).

San Francisco snapped its four-game losing skid with a 10-6 win over Chicago in last week’s Thursday nighter, covering as 3.5-point chalk at Candlestick Park. Despite the cold streak, the Niners went 2-2-1 ATS to keep their profitable ways intact.

Green Bay defeated Dallas last Sunday because of its defense, and the unit figures to match up well with San Francisco’s anemic offense on the frozen tundra. The Packers come into the game ranked fourth in defense (282.3 yards per game), and meet a Niners offense that ranks 27th (277.9 YPG) in the NFL.
