Baltimore Ravens (6-2)

The Baltimore Ravens have done very little to dispel the belief that they’re serious Super Bowl contenders. They’ve survived a very tough early-season schedule – At the Jets, at Cincinnati, at Pittsburgh, at New England – to go 6-2.

For the most part, the Ravens’ “D” has been steady this season. It ranks ninth in the NFL, including ninth against the pass – and that rank could improve with Ed Reed back from his hip surgery (he leads the team in picks after playing two games).

Offensively, Baltimore isn’t flashy but it’s very efficient. Joe Flacco has clicked nicely with his new receiving corps, led by Anquan Boldin. He has seven touchdown passes and no interceptions over the Ravens’ last three games. Ray Rice remains a solid every-down back who catches the ball as well as any runner in the league.

Atlanta Falcons (6-2)

Kudos to any bettors who figured the Falcons were unlucky last year and threw down on their NFC South futures for 2010. They’ve looked like a powerhouse team more often than not in 2010.

The key to Atlanta’s success has been offense and turnovers. The Falcons have fielded a potent, balanced attack in 2010. Matt Ryan continues to show amazing chemistry with Roddy White, who has been as good as any receiver in football this season. White dinged up his knee last Sunday in Atlanta’s victory over Tampa but insists he’ll be ready to play this week. The slimmed-down Michael Turner has run like he was shot out of a cannon of late.

The Falcons’ “D” bends – a lot – but doesn’t really break. It’s only 21st overall and 26th against the pass, allowing 250.5 yards per game. However, the Falcons have intercepted 13 passes eight games, one fewer than the league leader. They’ve halted plenty of opposing drives in the nick of time and allow a very respectable 19.2 points per game as a result.

The pick:

I know Baltimore’s “D” has been strong overall but is this team really elite against the pass? It faced Mark Sanchez, weak-armed Carson Palmer, Seneca Wallace, Charlie Batch, Tom Brady in New England’s conservative new approach – not exactly a who’s who of dominant aerial attacks.

Kyle Orton threw for 314 yards on the Ravens. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 382 yards on them. Baltimore has faced just one of the NFL’s top 11 offenses this season. I think the Ravens’ weakness against the pass will be exposed this week.

That isn’t to say Baltimore won’t pass on Atlanta, too. It will. I think we could have a surprising shootout on our hands. I’d bet the OVER in a heartbeat.

As for a winner, you can’t go wrong with Atlanta in a one-point game. The Falcons are 18-1 at the Georgia Dome with Matt Ryan as their starting quarterback. Read that stat again. And again. 18-1! Absolutely ridiculous. Pick the Falcons to ride their offense – and home dominance – to victory in what should be a very entertaining game.
