Sunday should tell a lot about both teams – expect some fireworks at FedEx Field.
The Atlanta Falcons made no bones about what they were going to attempt to do this season – up-tempo no-huddle offensive sets designed to drive opposing defenses nuts. Mission accomplished! The Falcons have the third best scoring offense in the game, the 11th best passing offense and the surprisingly low 18th ranked rushing unit. The running game showed some signs of life in Week 4 however – Michael Turner ran for 103 yards and a score in the win.
With Matt Ryan playing at an MVP caliber level, Roddy White, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez catching passes it is difficult to imagine any team slowing this offense down. A renewed confidence in the running game also helps ahead of their showdown on Sunday.

The Falcons have actually played some defense as well this year which has helped along the way to a 4-0 start. They are 8th against the pass giving up 207 yards per game but they still struggle against the run – 29th and giving up 146.25 yards per game. The Falcons defense held Cam Newton to just 215 yards in the air in Week 4 but gave up 199 yards on the ground.
The Washington Redskins have finally found their man! Robert Griffin III has been terrific in the first quarter of the season – he has been the architect of an offense that is 16th in league passing and tops in the NFL in rushing. It’s proof that a threat at quarterback opens the offense up to success in the running game. All of a sudden the Skins are a multi-pronged attack that puts points on the board! Washington’s defense has been a sore spot for them all season so far. They are 31st against the pass giving up an astounding 326.25 yards per game and they are 10th against the run. Against the high powered Atlanta offense this unit will surely have their hands full – their best hope is to slow, not stop Matt Ryan and company and let their offense go to work!
