Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers Preview

In a NFC match up between a couple of teams heading in the opposite direction the Carolina Panthers (1-11) host the Atlanta Falcons (10-2). NFL lines have the Falcons as 7.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 42.5.

In their last games the Panthers lost to the Seattle Seahawks 31-14 while the Falcons beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 28-24.

Heading into this NFC South game the Falcons are 8-4 ATS and the Panthers are 3-9 ATS.

The Panthers have the worst record in the league and are on track to get the 1st pick in the next draft while the Falcons have the best record in the league and are on track to have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Home field would be huge for Atlanta, as they are 6-0 at home this season.

The Panthers rank dead last in the league in passing yards per game and their “strength” on offense is their rushing attack, which ranks 21st in the league. There is a little hope for them this Sunday, as there is a good chance of rain for this game and if that happens the team that can run the ball has a better chance to win. That still gives the Falcons the advantage, as they have the league’s 9th ranked rushing offense led by RB Michael Turner, who is 5th in the league in rushing yards.

Turner has been a thorn in the side of the Panthers, as in his last 3 games facing Carolina he has averaged 111 yards and has scored 5 TD. Carolina ranks 27th in the league in rushing defense and in their loss to Seattle they gave up 161 rushing yards to a Seahawks’ team that had totaled 284 rushing yards in their previous 5 games.

Carolina has a good pass defense ranking 8th in the league, but keeping Atlanta QB Matt Ryan in check will be hard to do. They will have to have good coverage on WR Roddy White, who ranks 2nd in the league in receiving yards, and TE Tony Gonzalez. They cannot let these guys make the big play and if they can do that they may be able to pull off the home upset. Speaking of being at home the panthers are only averaging 9.8 ppg this season in their house. Football betting

Panthers’ rookie QB Jimmy Clausen will get another start this Sunday and the start of his pro career has not begun well. He is 0-6 as a starter and ranks last in the league in completion percentage (50.5%), passing yards (1,056), TD’s (1), and QB rating (55.3). Still Carolina head coach John Fox has some confidence in him stating, “I think Jimmy will get better with time and we’ve got some time left.” That must be a huge boost for Clausen. He does not have a great WR corps and the offensive line has given up the 3rd most sacks in the league. He has not passed for over 200 yards on the season and he may get there in this game facing an Atlanta pass defense that ranks 26th in the league, but don’t count on it.

Last week in their loss to the Seahawks the Panthers did jump out to a 14-0 lead with rushing TD’s from Mike Goodson and Jonathan Stewart. These 2 will have to play a great game for the Panthers to win, but they will be facing a Falcons’ rushing defense that ranks 8th in the league.

Everything is stacked against the Panthers in this game, but can they pull of the upset and win their 2nd game of the season? No. They will not be able to stop Turner and their offense will not snap out of their season-long slump all of a sudden. The Falcons will stay on pace for the best record in the NFC, as they will easily win this game and cover the spread.

Betting Trends

Atlanta has covered the spread in their last 4 games and is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games as a favorite of 3.5-10.
Carolina is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog of 3.5-10, and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games.
Even though Atlanta has a great offense that can put up a lot of points in the last 7 games between these 2 teams the total has gone Under 6 times.

Pick: Falcons -7.5
