Arizona Cardinals vs. San Diego Chargers Preview

In a non-conference match up the Sunday the San Diego Chargers (1-2) host the Arizona Cardinals (2-1). NFL betting lines has the Chargers as 9-points favorites in this game with a total of 46.

It is obvious that stats do not tell the whole story, as the Chargers are 1-2, but they have the league’s top-ranked offense and the 4th ranked defense. They have been killed by turnovers this season and last week in their loss to Seattle they had 5 of them.

The Cardinals were not expected to do much this season without Kurt Warner under center, but they have won 2 of 3 games even though those teams were Oakland and St. Louis. I mentioned the stats issue, as the 2-1 Cardinals rank 25th on offense and 26th on defense. The Cardinals were actually pretty lucky to win their last game, as the Raiders missed a 32-yard field goal as time expired, as well as 2 others, to gift-wrap the victory for Arizona.

The Chargers have had typical slow starts in the last few years, but is this season one of those or are they not the team that has been one of the best in the AFC for the past few seasons? The Chargers could really use a win, as going 1-3 will make it an uphill battle for them to make the post-season.

In their last games the Chargers lost to the Seattle Seahawks 27-20 while the Cardinals beat the Oakland Raiders 24-23.

Heading into this game both teams are 1-2 ATS.

QB Derek Anderson, who played decent last week going 12/26 for 122 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT, leads the less than mediocre passing offense of the Cardinals. He will be facing a solid San Diego pass defense that ranks 6th in the league and last week in the loss to the Seahawks gave up 203 passing yards. Football betting

The Cardinals strength on offense so far this season has been their rushing offense, which ranks 13th in the league. RB’s Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower are a good tandem in the backfield and last week in the win over the Raiders Wells averaged a solid 5.4 yards per carry. The San Diego rushing defense ranks 9th in the league and they were great last week holding Seattle to only 56 rushing yards.

Seahawks kick returner Leon Washington returned 2 kicks for 99 yards and 101 yards last week so the Chargers have to play better on special teams and try to tackle the guy with the ball before he gets to the end zone.

The Chargers had 5 turnovers last week and they were penalized 11 times for 83 yards and if they play a sloppy game again they will have a hard time winning this Sunday.

The Chargers have the second ranked pass offense led by QB Phillip Rivers, who blew up last week throwing for 455 yards with 2 TD, but he had 2 costly INT’s. TE Antonio Gates is his main target and he creates a match up problem for any opposing defense. In last week’s game he and WR Malcom Floyd averaged at least 15 yards per reception.

Arizona has the league’s 19th ranked pass defense and because the Chargers have such a dynamic passing attack their front line defense has to pressure Rivers, as if he is given time in the pocket he may put up HUGE numbers.

The Chargers thought they had their rushing woes solved by taking RB Ryan Matthews in the first round in this year’s draft, but he has been battling injuries and only has 104 yards on the season. Still, Mike Tolbert has played well averaging 5.2 yards per carry and the Chargers rank 12th in the league in rushing yards per game.

If the Chargers can run the ball they have a great chance to win, as Rivers will not have to do it all on offense. They may do that in this game, as Arizona’ rushing defense ranks 31st in the league and last week they gave up 133 yards on the ground to the Raiders.

The Chargers are a much better team than the Cardinals and they will not kill themselves like they did last week. They will easily win this home game and cover the spread moving to 2-2 on the season.

Trends:

Arizona is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
San Diego is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games, 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite, and has an Over record of 5-1 in their last 6 home games.

Pick: Chargers -9
