New York Jets-Pittsburgh Steelers Preview

Turns out that just about every assumption we made about the Jets was wrong. The Jets are not All Hat and No Cattle after all. The talk just turned out to be a mask and hid the fact that the NYJ are a very good team that is now one win away from beating – in order and on the road – the Colts, Patriots and Steelers.

Indy and New England may have been overrated, but if the Jets complete the hat trick with a win in Pittsburgh, they will have completed one of the great runs to the Super Bowl of any team in league history.

For those of us who figured that LaDainian Tomlinson was finished, his performance against the Patriots says otherwise. Tomlinson says now that late in the season the Jets were keeping him fresh for the playoffs.

For those of us who figured that Mark Sanchez was a warm-weather quarterback who cries for his mother when the temps drop under 40 Fahrenheit, check out the numbers from New York’s victory at New England last Sunday. He flat-out outplayed Tom Brady, and not many QBs can say that.

And for those of us in the 99.9 percent of the population who figured that Rex Ryan can’t coach in this league, there is 60 minutes of evidence from last Sunday that proves otherwise. Ryan, with one week less to prepare, still outsmarted Bill Belichick at every turn. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

His defense put tight clamps on Patriot receivers and there was somehow still enough manpower to pressure Brady into five sacks and a bunch of hurried passes and throwaways.

The Jets have now sent two sure-fire Hall of Fame quarterbacks to the sidelines this year. And now they’re coming after the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger, who has two Super Bowl titles to his credit.

It will be interesting to see if the war against the Ravens last week took any of the steam out of the Steelers, who were only 5-3 at home this season and have already lost to the Jets at Heinz. Pittsburgh is expected to get a boost with the return of injured DE Aaron Smith, who figures to see limited action but will add a little depth to the D-line.

Betting Trends:

The total has gone UNDER in 9 of the NY Jets last 11 games when playing Pittsburgh
NY Jets are 13-3 SU in their last 16 games on the road
NY Jets are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games
NY Jets are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games when playing Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is 7-1 SU in its last 8 games
Pittsburgh is 5-1 SU in their last 6 games when playing at home against NY Jets
The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Pittsburgh’s last 11 games when playing NY Jets
Pittsburgh is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games at home

The picks: The Jets seem to play best when they are in elimination games, and their Week 15 victory over the Steelers was just that. New York was coming off losses to New England and Miami, and a third straight defeat would have buried them six feet under. But the Jets responded, beating Pittsburgh, 22-17, and now they’re back for a rematch.

Handicappers will tell you that the worst thing to do is shoot at shadows, because defenses and offenses make adjustments.

Pittsburgh no doubt has spent this week working on its tentative special teams play. The Steelers got clobbered by the Jets return teams in Week 15, and lost despite holding NY to 276 total yards passing and rushing.

The line opened at 3.5 but has nudged up to 4 in some Vegas casinos. Grab the points at 4 and take the Jets to get to the Super Bowl.
