To overcome their NFL odds, San Francisco has some work left to do as they head to San Diego for their final preseason game, and with a couple of spots still available, they’ll have more to play for.

49ers vs Chargers odds – Friday, September 4, 10:00 PM ET

The 49ers won their third straight preseason game in thrilling fashion, beating Dallas 20-13 on the road by scoring 10 points in the last four minutes of the game. Nate Davis continued a steller preseason by going 10-of-15 for 132 yards, not a bad line for a rookie, and the way he’s playing, he could move past Alex Smith for the backup role behind Shaun Hill. Another pair of first-year players, Kory Sheets and Glen Coffee, have also impressed, meaning that the 49ers may be able to rest starter Frank Gore throughout the season, which would be a good thing for their online betting chances as Gore has been injured over the last couple of seasons.

The Chargers fell 27-24 in Atlanta, and they’re now 1-2 in the preseason, but they can take some positives out of that game. Philip Rivers was 10-of-15 for 185 yards and a touchdown, while he connected with Vincent Jackson for a couple of big plays. Rivers was the NFL’s top-rated passer in 2008, while Jackson broke out in a big way, and both are eager to prove they’re no flukes, especially Jackson. The Chargers were deadly efficient on third down, going 11-of-16, but they committed eight penalties along the way.

The Chargers are 3.5-point favorites at home according to betting services, but you probably won’t see any of their starters on the field, and the same goes for San Francisco as everyone is just trying to get through the last preseason game without any major injuries. The Chargers pretty much have their team sorted out, so there’s more competition on the San Francisco side. Don’t put too much stock in either of these records, because come regular-season time, the 49ers may not have first-round pick Michael Crabtree, who is the only rookie who hasn’t signed a contract.

San Francisco was having a pretty good preseason but San Diego brought them back to a bit of reality last night beating the 49ers 26-7. I still have high expectations for San Fran as I think Singletary will have this team ready to play every week.
