In 2013, Kansas City won 11 games, but eventually lost in the playoffs to Indianapolis. Last season a 9-7 finish was a bit of a disappointment, but that came at the expense of many injuries to some key players.

After 2 solid seasons and Peyton Manning supposedly fading and wearing down, the Chiefs are set to contend for the AFC West in 2015.

The reason for success starts at the QB position. In 2013, Kansas City acquired QB Alex Smith and that keyed a major piece for the franchise. Playing 11 seasons in the NFL, Smith will be playing in the same system for 3 straight years for the first time. In 2014 Smith 3265 yards and 18 touchdowns. While the Chiefs lost 4 of their last 5 games, Smith still was impressive. The most impressive stat line from the previous season is that he only threw 6 interceptions.

When speaking of key injuries in 2014, RB Jamaal Charles was one of them. When healthy, Charles is easily one of the best backs in the NFL. Charles has shown he still has the breakaway speed and can be a legit difference maker. Charles rushed for 1033 yards and had 9 touchdowns in 2014. He also caught 40 receptions for 291 yards.

Hopefully taking the load off him, Knile Davis will back him up. Davis is said to be one of the best #2 backs in the league as he offers the same attributes as Charles does.

The Chiefs knew that they need to upgrade the receiving situation. They did just that when they acquired Jeremy Maclin. While Maclin will be a dominating threat, the receiving core isn’t deep. At #2 Albert Wilson doesn’t have much experience, but offers a lot of plus side. If he can fit into the system early in the season, it will draw some of the attention away from Maclin and help the offense out a lot.

Defensively, the Chiefs have prided themselves here in the past seasons. The linebacking core is led by Justin Houston, who is one of the best pass rushers in the league. The secondary was boosted by draft pick Marcus Peters. An already young secondary gets younger, but the loss of Eric Berry could be a tough one to replace.

2015 Kansas City Chiefs Season Prediction:

The Chiefs have a lot of question marks on both sides of the ball. Their thin receiving depth is a giant question. While Maclin is a solid #1, not having any other threats behind him can be trouble. The defense can attract all their attention to Maclin until somebody proves to be a threat.

As for their running back situation, if Charles can stay healthy, look out. He’s a playmaker, but has shown he is very injury plaqued.

With a questionable secondary, the Chiefs will let up points. If Smith and company can keep up, Kansas City will be right up there with the Broncos.

A similar 9-7 season is likely here, with a possible Wild Card berth pending how the rest of the league fairs.
