Seahawks Will Lean On 12th Man As They Attempt To Defend Super Bowl Crown

The Seattle Seahawks are coming off the most impressive season in franchise history after posting a 13-3 record and making a playoff run that culminated with the team’s first Super Bowl win.

Now they will attempt to become the first team to repeat in more than a decade. Seattle lost a number of free agents in the offseason but all six Pro Bowl players return on a roster that features plenty of young talent and the 12th man cannot be overlooked. The Seahawks will have their work cut out for them in a crowded NFC West but look for them to once again challenge for a division title as they attempt to defend their Super Bowl crown.

Seattle has made the playoffs three times under Pete Carroll and there is no denying he deserves credit as one of the best head coaches in the NFL for the work he has done.

The decision to go with then-rookie quarterback Russell Wilson after trading for Matt Flynn in 2013 has paid off and while he may never put up elite numbers in the passing game, Wilson has already proven he is capable of leading the Seahawks to a championship and still hasn’t reached his prime.

Wide receiver Golden Tate left in free agency but Percy Harvin is healthy and Doug Baldwin was signed to an extension and will start ahead of Jermaine Kearse and rookie second-round pick Paul Richardson.

Richardson has elite speed and could surprise in his first year while fellow rookie fourth-round pick Kevin Norwood is a big target that will develop in the offense.

Luke Wilson will eventually start at tight end but as it stands he is a solid No. 2 option behind veteran Zach Miller.

Running back Marshawn Lynch is back after posting over 1,500 total yards and a career-high 14 touchdowns in 2013 but Robert Turbin and Christine Michael are both ready for more touches and should steal some in order to keep Lynch fresh.

The Seahawks will plug former first-round pick James Carpenter in at left guard next to left tackle Russell Okung and two-time Pro Bowl center Max Unger while rookies Justin Britt and Garrett Scott will challenge JR Sweezy for the starting job at right guard.

Most important is the return of Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” defense that ranked No. 1 in the NFL a year ago. Cornerback Richard Sherman, free safety Earl Thomas, and strong safety Kam Chancellor all went to the Pro Bowl a year ago and are back to lead the Seahawks’ vaunted secondary.

Cornerback Byron Maxwell proved his worth as a capable starter a year ago and will get the nod opposite Sherman with Jeremy Lane and Tharold Simon manning the nickel and dime spots. The fact that Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith won’t start is testament to Seattle’s depth at linebacker.

Bruce Irvin will start ahead of Smith next to one of the league’s most underrated middle linebackers in Bobby Wagner while KJ Wright gets the nod at the other outside linebacker spot.

The Seahawks lost Chris Clemons, Red Bryant, and Clinton McDonald on the defensive line but Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril return at defensive end with Brandon Mebane, Tony McDaniel, and Jordan Hill set to lead the rotation at defensive end.

Seattle added defensive end Cassius Marsh in the fourth round and he could contribute immediately as a pass rusher.

Although the depth along the defensive line took a hit the Seahawks’ defense returns with the linebacker and secondary positions virtually intact and have one more year of experience after ranking No. 1 in the NFL last season.

Wilson’s continued development will be key for an offense that still relies on a dominant ground game as its primary strength and it will be interesting to see what he has in store for his third year.

Seattle faces a tough schedule in a crowded NFC West that features the rival San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams, and Arizona Cardinals but they have the weapons to once again compete for a division title and will bank on the 12th man to help post another double-digit win total in 2014.
