2014 Oakland Raiders Schedule | Season Handicapping Picks

NFL Football Raiders Analysis

Ahhh the Oakland Raiders. Almost everyone in the football world figured it was going to be a long season for the men in black… and then we got a look at the schedule!!

49ers Odds [dfads params=’groups=63740&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
Odds to win the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX: 75/1
Odds to win the 2015 AFC Conference: 40/1
Season Win Total: 5 wins

Yikes – it is the most difficult schedule in the NFL in 2014 – a difficult road schedule is matched by an equally tough home slate. Two games against the Broncos and the Chiefs is torture enough but then there is the Seahawks, the 49ers, the Cards and the Rams that fall on the sched.

Vegas has Oakland’s win total set at 5 – let’s take a look if they can even reach that number!

Week 1: Sunday, Sept. 7, at NY Jets, 1 p.m.

The Raiders fly across country for their opener against a Jets team that will look totally different. Mike Vick may be guiding the offense and Chris Johnson and Eric Decker were added on the offseason. The Jets will have a lot to prove in Week 1 – the Raiders will be their victim.

Week 2 Sunday, Sept. 14, Houston, 4:25 p.m.

Winnable game – Matt Schaub gets to face his former team here! Houston will have some adjustments to make early in the season with their new Head Coach – I think the Raiders are in a good position to win here against one of the only teams worse than themselves last season.

Week 3 Sunday, Sept. 21, at New England, 1 p.m.

West Coast teams travelling to the East Coast is never a good bet (the Raiders are 0-7 in their last seven trips) – you’d be nuts to think the Raiders have a chance against New England!

Week 4 Sunday, Sept. 28, Miami, 1 p.m. (in London)

Off to jolly old England to play another team that was arguably worse than the Raiders last year – can you say DYSFUNCTIION? I like the Raiders to prevail here – they will likely have a good part of the crowd on their side in this one.

Week 5: BYE

Week 6 Sunday, Oct. 12, San Diego, 4:05 p.m.

Tough to know what to make of the Chargers but my gut tells me San Diego is just OK this year. The Raiders beat San Diego at home last year – Oakland matches up seemingly very well with what the Chargers hope to do on offense. I actually like Oakland on home turf to get to Phil Rivers and to post victory here.

Week 7 Sunday, Oct. 19, Arizona, 4:25 p.m.

Arizona’s defense is quietly one of the better units in the NFL – I expect the Raiders to struggle mightily against all of the NFC West teams. Carson Palmer will be a motivated guy against his former team as he guides the Cards to an easy win.

Week 8 Sunday, Oct. 26, at Cleveland, 4:25 p.m.

What is going on with the Cleveland Browns franchise – total disarray! We have zero idea who will be starting at QB and no clue who will be running the ball out of the backfield. The Browns may be a bigger mess than the Raiders this year. Look for an Oakland win!

Week 9 Sunday, Nov. 2, at Seattle, 4:25 p.m.

Nobody road team will win in Seattle this year – period!

Week 10 Sunday, Nov. 9, Denver, 4:05 p.m.

It is nearly unfathomable that the Raiders score enough points to keep up with the Broncos – last year Oakland was outscored 71-35 in the two meetings. This year should be eerily similar.

Week 11 Sunday, Nov. 16, at San Diego, 4:05 p.m.

While I liked the Raider at home in the first meeting, on the road it is a different story. I don’t think the Raiders are capable of a sweep here – the Chargers should be able to control this game with a strong rushing attack.

Week 12 Thursday, Nov. 20, Kansas City, 8:25 p.m.

The Raiders played the Chiefs very tough last year – QB Matt McGloin’s four interceptions were the difference in the game. Division games are always tough – I actually like the Raiders to pull an upset on home turf here.

Week 13 Sunday, Nov. 30, at St. Louis, 1 p.m.

The Rams are one of those teams that are better than their record suggests – playing in the toughest division in football and remaining competitive. Sam Bradford will be back and the Rams’ defense should be dominant. The Rams take this one easily.

Week 14 Sunday, Dec. 7, San Francisco, 4:25 p.m.

The 49ers are just too good in every aspect of the game to be denied here. Don’t expect a monster upset in this one!

Week 15 Sunday, Dec. 14, at Kansas City, 1 p.m.

Travelling to Arrowhead is no easy task – that’s for sure. I had the Raiders winning the first matchup in Oakland – I expect some revenge will be exacted in this one – the Chiefs should win this easily.

Week 16 Sunday, Dec. 21, Buffalo, 4:25 p.m.

The Buffalo Bills have had a rather tumultuous offseason – they may have gotten worse. EJ Manuel looks like just an average pivot and Buffalo’s defense took a small step backward this offseason. At home, I like the Raiders to prevail.

Week 17 Sunday, Dec. 28, at Denver, 4:25 p.m.

This could be a game in which the Broncos have everything wrapped up and they opt to rest a few players but even Denver’s second stringers should have their way, on home turf, with the Raiders.

Prediction

While the Raiders gained a little credibility with Matt Schaub and Maurice Jones-Drew coming over, they are still poised to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. Vegas has the win total set at 5 – I think they surprise and do a little better than that – not much though! I think six wins is attainable for Oakland this year – home field should produce a few wins and games in Cleveland, KC and San Diego are possible wins as well.
