2014 NFL Draft Handicapping Tips – Tennessee Titans

Tennessee Titans

Draft Preview

In a passing-driven league, the Titans will be looking to shore up their secondary, and have to at least be considering quarterback, given the mixed results of Jake Locker thus far.

Titans 2014 NFL Draft Predictions

Tennessee doesn’t have a ton of picks nor are there many picks in the early rounds, so shrewd choices will be paramount for this team in the upcoming NFL Draft.

First Round (#11 overall): Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State

A team like the 49ers could trade up to grab Tennessee’s 11th pick and take someone like LSU wideout Odell Beckham, it also would be a prudent move for the Titans – a roster that needs an overall upgrade – to stockpile some later picks.

But assuming the Titans stand pat, Gilbert would be a nice fit for their defense. Tennessee sorely needs to upgrade this position after losing Alterraun Verner to the Tampa Bay Bucs and although Michigan State corner Darqueze Dennard could also be in play here, I like the fit of Gilbert.

Second Round (#42 overall): Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State

The Titans have a rare pressing need in today’s NFL: the desire to grab a running back early. After letting longtime star Chris Johnson sign with the Jets in the offseason, Tennessee needs a new lead RB. Hyde is probably the best overall back in the draft, with a well-rounded skill set and coming from a Big Ten team that got him highly involved in the offense.

It’s also possible the Titans like the power of 230-lb Jeremy Hill from LSU, as he may remind some around the franchise of the bowling ball-esque LenDale White of several seasons ago.

Fourth Round (#112 overall): A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama

The celebrated college signal-caller of America’s most celebrated college football team over the past several seasons might be a nice fit for the Titans here, if he’s still available. The Titans must be looking at developing a QB of the future; Jake Locker just hasn’t turned out as planned.

For what McCarron lacks with arm strength on the deep throws, he grades out impressively in other areas. Zach Mettenberger from LSU might also be bandied about at this spot, but what he makes up for in arm strength, he is deficient to McCarron in other areas (namely, mobility and intangibles).

Other possibilities for the Titans: Darqueze Dennard (CB, Michigan St), Jeremy Hill (RB, LSU), Zach Mettenberger (QB, LSU), Tre Mason (RB, Auburn), Deion Belue (CB, Alabama)
