2014 AFC South Division Preview – NFL Handicapping Odds

Handicapping The AFC South

2014 AFC South Division Preview – A Slam Dunk for the Colts?

The AFC South belonged to the Indianapolis Colts last year and a look at the division reveals that it will be theirs to lose once again this upcoming season. On paper the AFC South looks like the Colts and only the Colts – the rest of the division will be lucky just to get to the .500 mark.

Is there any team that could surprise out of the AFC South?

Let’s take a look.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are the best of the B-level” teams in the NFL – very good but not quite elite. Andrew Luck has emerged, just like most thought he would – his presence alone makes the Colts a contender. The Colts actually beat the 49ers, the Seahawks and the Broncos last year – impressive indeed.

We know that Luck will bring it – with TY Hilton, Reggie Wayne, Hakeem Nicks and Donte Moncrief at his disposal will definitely do their part. The key is the running game – Indianapolis absolutely has to get the most out of Trent Richardson this year. He has to be better – doesn’t he?

Indy has won 11 games each of the last two seasons – no reason to think they will fall from that level – they play the easiest schedule in the NFL and their Divisional foes went just 13-35 last season. Indianapolis is a playoff team for sure – they will cruise to the AFC South title but the AFC Championship or the Super Bowl may be another year away.

Houston Texans

Wow – the Houston Texans have some work to do – just to become relevant again. Off a dismal 2-14 campaign the Texans did little to improve themselves in the offseason. The brought in Ryan Fitzpatrick to cure the QB woes (ask Tennessee how that worked out for them), Ben Tate is gone and Arian Foster is apparently already banged up!

Arian Foster is a serious injury risk and Andre Johnson is not a happy man – I am staying completely away from the Texans.

Tennessee Titans

Tennessee Titans Odds to Win the 2014 AFC South +700

The Tennessee Titans hope to finally get a full season from Jake Locker – the oft injured QB has to remain on the field for the Titans. He is good enough to take the 7-9 team of last year into a playoff spot. Chris Johnson is gone leaving a big hole in the running game – somebody needs to step up.

Defensively the Titans were competitive but they largely ignored that area in the draft. I could see Tennessee winning nine or ten games this year and challenge for a playoff spot.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguars Odds to win the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX 250/1
Jacksonville Jaguars Odds to win the 2015 AFC Conference 100/1
Jacksonville Jaguars Odds to Win the 2014 AFC South +1400

The Jacksonville Jaguars were bad in every aspect of the game – they don’t look all that thrilling going into this year. It looks like Chad Henne will start the season over Blake Bortles. Henne has never scared anybody at any time – Bortles may be starting sooner or later.

While I think this team could get 6 wins – a surprisingly tough schedule has the Jags looking more like a 4 win team.
