2011 Regular Season Opponents

Sun, Sept. 11 MINNESOTA San Diego signal-caller Philip Rivers spreads the ball around to everyone in his offense; the visiting Vikes better be ready to fly all around the field if they want a chance.

Sun, Sept. 18 @ New England One of the regular season’s best games in the first couple weeks. Two excellent QBs piloting two contending teams meet in hostile Foxboro for a… let’s just call it a measuring contest.

Sun, Sept. 25 KANSAS CITY The Chargers were in the top half of the league in every statistical category and the Top 5 in virtually everything but running the ball in 2010; KC may need a couple momentum-swinging special teams outbursts to pull an upset.

Sun, Oct. 2 MIAMI With three of the Chargers’ first four games at home, a strong start is imperative to seize the AFC West tradewinds. The Dolphins are a solid ballclub, but San Diego must have the mindset that this is a game destined for the win column.

Sun, Oct. 9 @ Denver A nice transition to road travel, considering the Broncos roll out green QB Tim Tebow and a fairly nauseating defense to boot.

Sun, Oct. 16 BYE

Sun, Oct. 23 @ New York Jets An interesting match-up of two teams close to the same region in the AFC pecking order. Chargers head coach Norv Turner and his troops could shut up gregarious Rex Ryan in a hurry if San Diego head back out west with a win.

Mon, Oct. 31 @ Kansas City A spooky-good tilt (yeah, that was lame) between the top dogs in the division. If San Diego can put the game in Chiefs’ QB Matt Cassel’s hands rather than Kansas City’s speedy x-factor players, you have to like the odds of a road victory.

Sun, Nov. 6 GREEN BAY We might see how acute – if at all – the Super Bowl hangover is for the Packers as they travel to SoCal.

Thurs, Nov. 10 OAKLAND The Chargers definitely have the defense to make Oakland’s offensive efforts one-dimensional – though that dimension (the run) was pretty effective last season.

Sun, Nov. 20 @ Chicago The Bears don’t blow anyone away with their measurables, but last year they found ways to win games. All things considered, San Diego was rather the opposite. It will be interesting to see how this road game shakes out for the Bolts.

Sun, Nov. 27 DENVER The AFC West teams seem especially hostile towards each other, so you know the Broncos are going to bring 100% on the effort front, even if they are out-classed.

Mon, Dec. 5 @ Jacksonville In a somewhat random late-season Monday night contest, the Chargers will travel to Florida intending to keep a marker on RB Maurice Jones-Drew, one of the Jaguars’ only true threats.

Sun, Dec. 11 BUFFALO The Bills are used to playing in bitter, swirling wind and hellish conditions in December; the trip to a retirement haven like San Diego will be a treat for Buffalo’s players, even if the expected happens on the gridiron.

Sun, Dec. 18 BALTIMORE Along with New England, Kansas City and Green Bay, this is one of the most fascinating games on the Chargers’ slate in 2011. There are quite a few teams in the AFC that can legitimately call themselves contenders. The Ravens and Chargers are both on that list.

Sat, Dec. 24 @ Detroit Since the Lions have been bad nearly for my entire lifetime, it is strange to say, but Detroit is a steadily improving franchise, so San Diego can’t get caught napping in this game.

Sun, Jan. 1 @ Oakland Without the Raiders lobbying some kind of passing attack in 2011, the smart money is on the Chargers closing out the 2011 regular season on a bright note.
