2011 Regular Season Opponents

Sun, Sept. 11 @ Houston The league’s most refined passing attack (when most of its targets aren’t succumbed to injury) travels to Texas to face one of the most refined offenses not just in the AFC South, but in the NFL.

Sun, Sept. 18 CLEVELAND The Colts were only 25th in the league last season at stopping the run; certainly a bad omen with powerhouse Peyton Hillis coming to town. Indianapolis’ Peyton – still deserving the title of the most well-known football player of that namesake – will likely shred the Browns secondary.

Sun, Sept. 25 PITTSBURGH A Colts fan will tell you that any season with Peyton Manning at the helm is a potential Super Bowl-drive campaign, but this is a good early test to see if that theory holds water.

Mon, Oct. 3 @ Tampa Bay This game has a key storyline that typically makes a Monday-nighter intriguing: One of the league’s premier veteran QBs squaring off against one of the best young pivots in the game. What can Tampa’s Josh Freeman show us in this one?

Sun, Oct. 9 KANSAS CITY Indy has historically smashed the Chiefs; if Manning has Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon, Dallas Clark and Anthony Gonzalez at his disposal rather than Blair White and Brody Eldridge, that trend remains intact.

Sun, Oct. 16 @ Cincinnati There’s no reason why the Colts shouldn’t win this game, even if the injury bug rears its ugly head again. This road game is a good tune-up for tougher challenges ahead.

Sun, Oct. 23 @ New Orleans One of the major concerns last year was adequately protecting Manning in the pocket. Indy’s draft addressed this worry with two potential starting tackles in Anthony Castonzo and Ben Ijalana. Some progress towards this aim would be nice, with Indy in tough on the road versus the Saints.

Sun, Oct. 30 @ Tennessee It is always fun to beat a hated divisional rival on their turf. Indy typically suffers more against power runners than speedy finesse types, so it might fare decently against high-octane RB Chris Johnson.

Sun, Nov. 6 ATLANTA Another tale of the throwers: Arguably the league’s elite in Peyton Manning matching up against the QB who, to me, most resembles a young Manning in Matt Ryan.

Sun, Nov. 13 JACKSONVILLE The Colts have been the class of the AFC South for a long time, but the Jags often give Indy all it can handle. Jacksonville can run block and have a versatile back in Maurice Jones-Drew; these aspects usually terrorize the Colts.

Sun, Nov. 20 BYE

Sun, Nov. 27 CAROLINA For Indy to keep cranking out its perennial double-digit win seasons, it must wrest the easy games from the middling teams.

Sun, Dec. 4 @ New England Every football fan circles this game on their calendar. In what’s simply been the best league rivalry of the last decade, you know you’re always in for a treat when these teams hook up.

Sun, Dec. 11 @ Baltimore Indianapolis kicks off the month of December with two supremely tough road games. The quality of Indy’s 2011 season could very well hinge on how it plays in these couple of late-season games.

Sun, Dec. 18 TENNESSEE Titans’ CB Cortland Finnegan is excellent, so Manning would be wise to use his (hopefully) deep stable of targets to exploit other Tennessee defenders.

Thurs, Dec. 22 HOUSTON You basically have to plan on Texans’ WR Andre Johnson burning you, but the key to victory against Houston is ensuring that other pieces (Kevin Walter, Owen Daniels, Arian Foster, etc.) don’t have a field day.

Sun, Jan. 1 @ Jacksonville On the plus side, the Colts should get to end the season in decent weather. Every other aspect spells this game to be important, though – especially if the division race is tight.

I don’t know what to think about the Colts chances this year. Though I’ll always say any team with a healthy Peyton Manning at the helm is a legitimate Super Bowl contender….Does he have enough weapons is my ? for 2011 though.
