2011 Regular Season Opponents

Sun, Sept. 11 INDIANAPOLIS Houston has been perceived as the most viable divisional challenger to Indy for years now, but something always ends up going to pot. This much is clear: the Texans were dead last in pass defense last season; a marked improvement is crucial to hang with Peyton Manning and Co.

Sun, Sept. 18 @ Miami This offers a decent chance for Houston to square its early-season record at .500. If RB Arian Foster can continue what he started with 2010’s great campaign, pivot Matt Schaub should inflict maximum damage also.

Sun, Sept. 25 @ New Orleans The scouting report for the Indy game is much the same as the third test versus New Orleans. If the Texans can’t figure out how to cover someone, they are sunk. Houston addressed the pass-rush and the back seven in the Draft; a lot is riding on early production from rookies.

Sun, Oct. 2 PITTSBURGH This should be a great litmus test for the Texans. There are obviously some established pieces and lots of talent in Houston, but is that team congealed enough to beat one of the league’s perennial top dogs?

Sun, Oct. 9 OAKLAND Houston needs to beat the less imposing teams on its schedule, because there will inevitably be some slip-ups. “Exhibit A” is Oakland coming to town.

Sun, Oct. 16 @ Baltimore Unfriendly environs should be the least of the Texans’ worries in this tricky road game.

Sun, Oct. 23 @ Tennessee Houston’s match-ups against Tennessee and Jacksonville this year will be vital as to how the dominoes stack in the AFC South in 2011.

Sun, Oct. 30 JACKSONVILLE Will tenth overall pick, QB Blaine Gabbert, start for the Jags? Several seasons now have proven that veteran pivot David Garrard is not the answer for Jacksonville.

Sun, Nov. 6 CLEVELAND Beating the Browns was a piece of cake, until battering ram RB Peyton Hillis burst on the scene last season. But let’s not delude ourselves: the Browns (5-11 last year) still have plenty of work to do.

Sun, Nov. 13 @ Tampa Bay Tampa is a good case study of a team that’s gotten good in a hurry; Houston’s offense must be firing at full capacity – with liberal doses of Foster – in order to win this one.

Sun, Nov. 20 BYE

Sun, Nov. 27 @ Jacksonville Playing against RB Maurice Jones-Drew must suck, but the silver lining is that the Jaguars are one-dimensional.

Sun, Dec. 4 ATLANTA Looking at the Texans and the Falcons on paper, they have two of the most balanced offenses in the NFL. Hopefully, this game translates into an offensive co-ordinators’ dream.

Sun, Dec. 11 @ Cincinnati Carson Palmer or no Carson Palmer, Houston must nail down this road game – and indeed at least a couple games in December – for a respectable finish.

Sun, Dec. 18 CAROLINA Cincy and the Panthers offer a great opportunity to build up a head of steam for Houston near the end of the regular season.

Thurs, Dec. 22 @ Indianapolis The Texans head to Lucas Oil Stadium to try to tip the balance of power in the AFC South. If Houston brings some more “D” to the table and the Colts have a similar barrage of injuries, it’s possible.

Sun, Jan. 1 TENNESSEE Getting divisional rival Tennessee in the Texans’ barn to finish the season… Titans RB Chris Johnson is a tall order, but if there is any time the Texans will handle him, it is this game.
