Tampa Bay Bucs Betting Odds – NFL Football Futures

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were one of the true surprises of the NFL last season – now expectations may be a tad high considering how young that this team still is.

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 10-6 SU, 10-6 ATS
Projection this season – 10-6 (3rd in NFC South)
Bucs Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +3000
Bucs 2011/12 NFC Odds – +2000
2011 Bucs NFC South Lines – +400

The Bucs certainly have some pieces in play but with a tougher schedule, in a tough division, Tampa Bay will not catch anyone off guard this season.

A team on the rise –yes. An NFC South Champ – not yet!

Tampa Bay benefitted from solid, largely mistake-free football from their young talent last season. Quarterback Josh Freeman was terrific, Receiver Mike Williams exceeded all expectations and Running Back LeGarrette Blount became one of the players to watch week in and week out.

The great news is that all three will be back in 2011-2012. The bad news is that none of the three will catch anybody off guard. One concern, in my mind is the lack of depth at every position for Tampa. Behind LeGarrette Blount is an aging and injury prone Cadillac Williams and behind Mike Williams is Sammy Stroughter and Arrelious Benn.

Stroughter and Benn have potential to break out this season – one or both will have to if the Bucs are to take the next step. Kellen Winslow is still a Buc and offers a decent security blanket for Josh Freeman.

Defensively, Tampa Bay is equally young. Adrian Claybourne and Da’Quan Bowers are projected to start right away in Tampa’s revamped pass rush – a pass rush that generated a league second worst 26 sacks last season. These two rookies join second year Gerald McCoy who was forced to sit out much of last season with injury. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Hopes are that the hiring of All Pro Keith Mallard as Defensive Line Coach will allow the Bucs to generate some much needed pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Tampa Bay’s secondary is an area of concern going into 2011-2012 – a concern that is magnified with the fact that the Bucs are in the same division with such QB Studs as Drew Brees and Matt Ryan and the fact that their best playmaker in the secondary Aqib Talib’s future is uncertain because of off field issues.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFC South Prediction:

Tampa Bay certainly appears to have their swagger back – they came from nowhere last season and became very formidable.

Credit Coach Raheem Morris for rallying his young team. It may be difficult for this young team to duplicate their impressive 2010-2011 feat but I have faith in the coaching staff to keep the guys focused. Unfortunately for Bucs fans, they play in a very tough NFC South.

I expect a 10-6 record; similar to last season and like last year, a third place finish is probable.

The Bucs are close but are not quite there yet!
