Chicago Bears Betting Odds – NFL Football Futures

The Chicago Bears enter the 2011-2012 season with perhaps the most to prove of any team in the NFL. Lovie Smith and his coaching staff have one more chance to take this team from pretender to contender or they may be looking for work in the 2012-2013 season.

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 11-5 SU, 9-6-1 ATS
Projection this season – 7-9 (3rd in NFC North)
Bears Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +3000
Bears 2011/12 AFC Odds – +1000
2011 Bears NFC North Lines – +450

The Bears used the Free Agency period to try to improve their team – time will tell if the Cowboys castoffs will accomplish just that.

Chicago’s offense will once again be a huge question mark going into the 2011 season. Jay Cutler is back and hopes are that he can put aside the mountain of criticism that followed Chicago’s departure from the playoffs last season. Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz has yet to weave any magic in Chi-town making the microscope even larger on his unit’s production.

Can he get Jay Cutler over the hump or will the whiney Cutler prevail?

Additions on the offensive side of the ball include Roy Williams who will be reunited with Martz after a less than scintillating stint in Dallas. Martz predicts that Williams will return to form and that he is good for 70-80 catches this season. Keep dreaming Mike! [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Another addition comes in the form of Marion Barber who also rightfully fell out of favour in Dallas. Aging and injury prone, Barber presents an intriguing compliment to the grossly underpaid Matt Forte. However, one thing is certain in Chicago – if the Bears do not shore up their leaky Offensive Line, the passing game and the running game will be mired in mediocrity once again.

Security blanket Greg Olsen was unceremoniously jettisoned to Carolina which puts even more pressure on the offensive talent that the Bears possess. There is a lot of uncertainty going into the season – not the type of atmosphere that breeds success.

Thank God for the Bears defense. Brian Urlacher and Julius Peppers are worth a couple of wins all by themselves. Don’t worry about the Bears defense – worry about the offense.

Chicago Bears NFC North Prediction

The atmosphere in Chicago seems toxic to me. I know that media scrutiny is just part of the game but in Chicago it seems to be amplified.

The Bears start their season against Atlanta, at New Orleans and versus Green Bay this season – 0-3 is certainly possible. When thing go bad for the Bears things tend to spiral out of control. Expect a disappointing season in the Windy City this year and hope that 2011 will finally lead to a change in culture for the Bears.

Look for the team to finish 8-8 behind the Packers and maybe even the Detroit Lions. It’s painful I know but third place in the North is a distinct possibility.
