2011 Regular Season Opponents

Sun, Sept. 11 @ Chicago The battle of two youngish strong-armed pivots with franchise potential: the One that Nobody Likes (Chicago’s Jay Cutler) vs. the One that Everybody Likes (Atlanta’s Matt Ryan). Not a bad way to start the 2011 season.

Sun, Sept. 18 PHILADELPHIA The Falcons are adept at running the ball and stopping the run, but in this battle of the birds it is trouble for Atlanta if it cannot curtail Philly’s high-flying pass attack.

Sun, Sept. 25 @ Tampa Bay The visitors would be wise to apply a liberal dose of RB Michael Turner in this one; the Bucs were good at every facet of the game last year except plugging the run (28th in the NFL).

Sun, Oct. 2 @ Seattle If the Dirty Bird defense gobbles up tailbacks Marshawn Lynch and Leon Washington, Atlanta should be able to grab this faraway road contest.

Sun, Oct. 9  GREEN BAY How the Falcons show up at home against the reigning champs should be a litmus test for how legitimate they are, in terms of winning big this season.

Sun, Oct. 16 CAROLINA Whether it is controversial rookie Cam Newton or someone else under center for the visiting Panthers, they are sure to have a worse success rate than Brian Fantana’s Sex Panther cologne.

Sun, Oct. 23 @ Detroit It hasn’t been an overnight fix for the lowly Motown crew, but don’t be mistaken – the Lions are gradually getting better. Atlanta should expect a tough match-up on the road here.

Sun, Oct. 30 BYE

Sun, Nov. 6 @ Indianapolis The Colts had an unbelievable rash of injuries last season; assuming it breaks a little more in the luck department for Indy, Peyton Manning will have his weapons and the Colts will be as strong as ever. The key to this game is for the Falcons to get to Manning – Indy’s offensive line is sub-par at best.

Sun, Nov. 13 NEW ORLEANS An interesting match-up will be between Roddy White, Atlanta’s premier wideout and solid Saints cornerback Jabari Greer. The Falcons would be wise to abuse N’awlins in the seam with the ageless Tony Gonzalez.

Sun, Nov. 20 TENNESSEE With a good O-line and Chris Johnson, you likely won’t stop the Titans’ running game, but if you can limit Johnson from having a career day, you have a good chance to beat Tennessee.

Sun, Nov. 27 MINNESOTA If the Titans’ Johnson weren’t a tall enough order, now you have Adrian Peterson coming to town. Oh, joy!

Sun, Dec. 4 @ Houston The Texans have had plenty of talent for a few seasons now, but they are enigmatic and often don’t play to their capabilities. Good news for the Dirty Birds. Can underrated Falcons CB Brent Grimes slow down Andre Johnson?

Sun, Dec. 11 @ Carolina For Atlanta to be the unquestioned king of the division, it needs to beat the strong teams (Re: the Saints) as well as the weaker ones (Re: the Panthers).

Thurs, Dec. 15 JACKSONVILLE The Falcons draw Maurice Jones-Drew and the Jags on short rest, but at least they get them at home and with minimal travel turnaround time, having played in North Carolina four days earlier.

Mon, Dec. 26 @ New Orleans A huge game, no doubt about it. If Atlanta is going to win the NFC South again in 2011, it likely goes through Mardi Gras Central at some point. This one’s even on MNF.

Sun, Jan. 1 TAMPA BAY The Falcons’ season closes out with two crucial divisional clashes versus the other two teams that have a chance in this rapidly improving NFC cluster.
