NFL Week 10 Preview

Week 10 of the 2010-11 NFL season starts earlier than usual with a great Thursday night matchup between the Ravens and the Falcons. There are also a couple of good divisional rivalries on tap, as the second half of the season gets underway.

Here I take a look at the matchups, giving you some early insight that will help make your 2010 NFL wagers winners. Teams with byes this week are Green Bay, Oakland, New Orleans, and San Diego.

THU, NOV 11 TIME (ET)

Baltimore at Atlanta 8:20 PM NFL – Even though the Falcons are a great team at the Dome, they let the Bucs back in it last week, and if not for an outstanding goal line stand from the defense, the game could have went the other way. The Ravens run game is clicking and they too have a solid defense as shown in their win against the Fins. Expect Baltimore to win a low scoring affair.

SUN, NOV 14 TIME (ET)

Detroit at Buffalo 1:00 PM FOX – The Bills had its best chance to end its winless streak last week and blew it. Now they get another gift, but bettors beware of a Lions team that darn near took out the Jets last week. Detroit wins even without Stafford.

Minnesota at Chicago 1:00 PM FOX – Too bad the Vikings and the Bears are complete disasters, because this could have been a good NFC North battle. I’m not buying what the Vikes are selling despite their comeback victory over Arizona last week. The tension between the coaching staff and players is a distraction. As for the Bears, well Forte is a disappointment and the O-line is going to get Cutler killed. When in doubt, go with the home team.

NY Jets at Cleveland 1:00 PM CBS – How about those Browns? I get excited every time the Pats lose, and last week’s thumping by rookie Colt McCoy and the Dawg Pound just about sent me into a tizzy. The running game is firing on all cylinders and the team just plays hard every down. All things that could be just enough to upset the Jets, who barely scratched out a win over the Lions last week. This is your dog pick of the week –take the Browns.

Cincinnati at Indianapolis 1:00 PM CBS –The Bengals have become the laughing stock of the AFC North, and are in last place one game back of the Browns after losing its fifth in a row against Pittsburgh. The Colts lost a close one in Philly and will look to redeem themselves. I like the Colts chances as long as Peyton Manning is taking the snaps.

Tennessee at Miami 1:00 PM CBS – The Fins will need to give the Titans a heavy dose of Ronnie Brown and the Wildcat, something they did not do after the first quarter in their loss to Baltimore last weekend. The Fins are yet to win at home and Tennessee’s Chris Johnson won’t make it easy, as Miami has to wait until Week 11 to try again.

Carolina at Tampa Bay 1:00 PM FOX – The Bucs are improving despite losing a close one down in Georgia last week. The Panthers are just about the most awful team in the league (besides the Bills) and may have to play a game of “name that quarterback”. If Tampa can chew up yards and control the clock with RB Cadillac Williams, they should have no problem winning this one.

Houston at Jacksonville 1:00 PM CBS – If the Jags want a shot at the postseason, they will need to build on last week’s win in Dallas, delivering a strong rushing attack behind RB Maurice Jones-Drew. Both teams play horrible defense, so I will go with the better offense. In this case Houston, as Schaub and Johnson could have a big day.

Kansas City at Denver 4:05 PM CBS – Despite their OT loss to the Raiders, KC brings an improved defense and running game to this contest while the Broncos seem to be the only ones sucking wind at Mile High. With four consecutive losses including one to the lowly 49ers, I just don’t see how they win this one.

Dallas at NY Giants 4:15 PM FOX – A reversal of Week 7, this NFC East division rivalry will now make its way to the tri-state area. The Giants beat the Cowboys –but who hasn’t– in the Big D 41-35, just three weeks ago and I expect a repeat at the new Meadowlands against a dazed Dallas rushing defense.

Seattle at Arizona 4:15 PM FOX – The Seahawks beat the Cards in the first meeting of the season in Week 7 as the Red Birds put up just 10 points on three field goals. Seattle has dropped two in a row scoring a total of 10 points for both games. I expect the Cards Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston to step up in this one against an inexperienced Seahawks secondary snatching a win in this NFC West showdown.

St. Louis at San Francisco 4:15 PM FOX – If the Rams’ want any chance of winning at least one game this year on the road, they will need to run Steven Jackson right at the Niners’ defense. The Rams are the better team here, while the San Francisco defense is just too inconsistent and underachieve in too many games. The Rams roll in this one.

New England at Pittsburgh 8:20 PM NBC – The Pats were outplayed by the Browns last time out and will likely be on a mission to redeem themselves in this one. The Steelers will bring its nearly flawless defense to thwart those efforts. The Steelers lead the all-time series, but the Patriots have owned Pittsburgh winning six of seven meetings over a 10-year period before the Steelers broke through in 2008. This contest has all the makings of an epic battle with Pittsburgh coming out on top.

MON, NOV 15 TIME (ET)

Philadelphia at Washington 8:30 PM –McNabb will welcome his former team and division rivals to RFK for the second of two meetings in 2010. Washington won the first meeting 17-12 back on Oct 3 in the City of Brotherly Love. Mike Shanahan benched McNabb in favor of Rex Grossman last week so it will be interesting see how he reacts in this one. The Eagles seem to have it more together, so I expect Vick and company to win the rematch.
