Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 13-3 SU, 10-6 ATS
Projection this season – 11-5 (first in NFC South)

Take away Drew Brees from this roster and what’s left? A ton of players who might not be the best in the league, conference or even division, but who just plain get the job done.

There still appears to be a lot of toothpaste left in the tube for another decent run deep in the playoffs, even if it doesn’t all end with another Super Bowl title next February.

There are role players galore, only they all seem to have star talent. Reggie Bush, Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey, Devery Henderson, Pierre Thomas.

On any given play they can all taste the end zone; on any given game they can put up big numbers, then be content to pass the baton to another player the next week.

Brees and the offense operate behind an offensive line that may not be the best in the NFL, but is a lot closer to the top than to the bottom. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Center Jonathan Goodwin is a Pro Bowler, and Jahvi Evans and Carl Nicks are both A+ talented O-linemen. The O-line gives Brees ample time to finds receivers, vital because at 6-foot the QB needs an extra split second to find targets.

The MVP on defense may be coordinator Gregg Williams. NO gave up 341 points last season, which doesn’t seem like a major accomplishment, but it was 52 points better than the year before, and the defense logged a lot of time because the offense scored so quickly the ball was turned over. Jabari Greer and Super Bowl star Tracy Porter are two of best CBs in the league.

DE Will Smith causes huge problems for offenses attacking QBs’ blind sides, and linebacker Jonathan Vilma has the speed to go sideline to sideline.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – The Saints have too much talent to take a major step backwards, and if the serendipity of 2009 doesn’t re-appear this season, the schedule provides a bit of a firewall.

NO has four games against the weak NFC West (SF, Arizona, St. Louis and Seattle), plus a home game against Cleveland. Interesting that Williams called out first-round pick Patrick Robinson after the CB got torched in an exhibition loss at New England.

In fact, Williams wasn’t pleased with much of the defense in the 27-24 defeat.
