Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 10-6 SU, 7-7-2 ATS
Projection this season – 11-5 (first in NFC South)

Say this for the Pats – since winning the third of three Super Bowl titles in 2004, they have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

The 2007 Super Bowl loss to the Giants has been followed by a series of mediocre drafts in which the Pats have regularly turned up their noses on big-name college talent in exchange for multiple (lower-priced) picks in later rounds.

Many of those drafted players have been cut or are struggling to hang on to roster spots, and the Pats are suddenly devoid of playmakers, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

But what NE does have are Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, and there could be worse places to start building a team that has as its goal contending for the Super Bowl every season. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Belichick has had success and is most comfortable with developing schemes rather than stockpiling and beating teams with talent, and he’ll be tested this season. The defense has a sandwich look, with veterans (led by nose tackle Vince Wilfork) on the line and some veterans (Leigh Bodden being the best) in the secondary surrounding a suspect linebacking group.

Jerod Mayo is solid at one inside spot, but the Pats are still feeling the losses of Mike Vrabel (trade) and Tedy Bruschi (retirement). There are high hopes for high draft pick Brandon Spikes, and Belichick is counting rookie Jermaine Cunningham to supply edge pressure that was in short supply last season.

There are some concerns about the offense, where a slew of veteran running backs (Fred Taylor, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, Laurence Maroney) have been fighting for touches in camp. The return of Wes Welker early from ACL surgery has solidified the receiver position, though no one knows what Randy Moss will be up to as he enters the final year of his contract.

And there are problems in the line, where All-Pro guard is holding out for more money. Belichick has always been able to fix offensive lines, so there’s no reason for panic yet.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – With the Jets talking big and the Dolphins at least a little better, there are whispers that New England could fall as far as third in a very tough AFC East this season. But New England was 10-6 with pretty much the same group last season, and those 6 losses included four games in which the Pats lost fourth-quarter leads – something that’s not likely to happen this time around.

Since the schedule is brutal early, what you see early might not be what you get by the end of the year.
