Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 9-7 SU, 9-7 ATS
Projection this season – 9-7 (third in AFC East)

It’s lock and load time in East Rutherford, where the Jets, flush from their phony 9-7 2009 season and improbable playoff run to the AFC title game, have declared that getting to the Super Bowl is a mere formality, winning it is inevitable and the NFL would might as well mail the Lombardi Trophy to the team’s front office.

As the world champion Washington Redskins can attest, much can happen before the ink even dries on big-money contracts. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

But the Jets and coach Rex Ryan figure that they are in prime position to knock down the door after banging hard on it last season. And with the consensus being that New England is in a fade pattern and Miami maybe just not ready, the Jets might be on to something.

If sky-high expectations are to be approached, two things have to fall NY’s way – shutdown corner Darrelle Revis must be signed and Mark Sanchez needs to be the quarterback who played so well in playoff wins over Cincinnati and San Diego and not the one who threw 20 interceptions (vs. 12 TD passes) last season.

Revis and the Jets are playing hardball in contract talks, but with a possible lockout next season no one really believes that he will risk going two full years without playing. And Sanchez, whose bad habit of throwing into coverage was the major factor in an early-season skid in which the Jets lost 6 of 7, figures to have a better grasp on things this time around.

New York remains a run-first team, with Shonn Greene taking over the top spot without having to share carries with Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. Anything the Jets can bleed out of aging LaDainian Tomlinson is gravy. The offensive line has the perfect blend of youth and talent.

The Jets sacked the quarterback only 32 times last season, but in Ryan’s defensive scheme it could be any four defenders, and no defensive unit allowed opposing QBs to complete a smaller percentage of passes (51.7). Revis is just about the best in the league and forces wideouts to out of their comfort zones. And inside linebackers Bart Scott and David Harris are two of the best in the business.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – Coaches like to say they deal only with the players who are at camp, and right now the Jets don’t have Revis, and if that continues it’s a guarantee that teams will try to beat the Jets over the top.

With Baltimore, New England and (at) Miami the first three games, the Jets have the opportunity of taking control early in the AFC East.
