Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 7-9 SU, 8-8 ATS
Projection this season – 9-7 (second in AFC East)

If the Dolphins manage to scratch and claw their way past the Patriots and Jets, chances are it will be because of a rejuvenated defense led by incoming defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.

Nolan has been around the NFL block, and has had success just about everywhere. His latest resume builder was piecing together a Bronco defense that started the season with no individual stars but blossomed almost immediately.

Gone is the read-and-react defense that last season gave up 390 points (no playoff team in the AFC East allowed more than 320) and in its place is a 3-4 attacking unit. Dolphin defenders won’t blitz as much as the Jets’ D does, but you get the idea. Extra rushers will come from every angle, depending on down, distance and offensive formations.

Assuming newcomer Brandon Marshall keeps his nose clean and doesn’t revert to the antics he pulled in Denver, the Dolphins think they finally have a wideout who can stretch the field, open up the running game and allow Chad Henne to take a step up from an OK quarterback into a game-changer.

Lots of ifs there, especially since there are problems with the two-headed backfield of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. Brown is coming off foot surgery, and Williams – who gained 1,121 yards last year – enters this season at 33 years old.

The Dolphins would love to do what they did last season offensively – control the ball and grind out long drives behind Brown and Williams, letting Henne manage the game and occasionally go over the top to Marshall. Offensive lines would rather run-block, and assuming Jake Long and Vernon Carey stay healthy, there aren’t two better tackles in the division.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – This team knocked on the playoff door last season before giving up 84 points in the final three games (losses at Tennessee and home to Houston and Pittsburgh) when the defense couldn’t step up.

Hopes are high this season that the Fins can take advantage in the AFC East, where the Patriots are caught in a transition season and the Jets may have trouble getting their act together with a ton of new players.

Brown is likely to sit out most, if not all, of the exhibitions as he rest his foot for the regular season.
