Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 14-2 SU, 10-5-1 ATS
Projection this season – 11-5 (first in AFC South)

Someday, well into the future when Peyton Manning is retired and doing commentary on ESPN, the Colts’ run will be history. What happens in the final 5-6 years of Manning’s career will determine whether Indy will be viewed as one of the great teams in pro football history or the NFL’s version of the Atlanta Braves – talented, but lacking something that enables them to win the big one.

For now, though, the Colts have more talent than anyone else in the AFC South and certainly enough juice to make another deep playoff run.

The point of the spear is, of course, Manning, and everything that the team does is dependent on No. 18 being healthy and productive.

His ability to stay on the field (he’s hit less than any other quarterback due to his quick release – only 13 sacks in 2009) and stunning big-play capability can change the course of a game in one play.

What other quarterback could make stars of unknowns Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon?

It would be wise to keep an eye on the offensive line this season. These guys were roasted by GM Bill Polian for what he called a subpar performance in the Super Bowl, and free agent signings and draftees will add some bulk in front of Manning.

Because they tanked the final two games of the regular season it’s hard to get a grasp on whether the Colts’ defense was too gassed in the Super Bowl, but in the final 5 games this team played, it was outscored by an average score of 22-18.

Dwight Freeney was hobbled late, Robert Mathis has been around the block and no one knows if safety Bob Sanders will even play this season.

Linebacker Gary Brackett (13 tackles in the Super Bowl) still has game, but this appears to be a defense that badly needs an infusion of playmakers.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – The blueprint for beating the Colts is to control clock and keep Manning off the field. Didn’t work for Miami last year, but that’s the idea. Houston is the chic pick in the AFC South. Don’t believe it.

The Texans can’t beat the Colts, and would have to at least split to make it a race in the division. Indy is primed for a step back, but not that big a step.

Next Up: Dallas Cowboys
