Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 13-3 SU, 8-7-1 ATS
Projection this season – 11-5 (first in AFC West)

Top-flight quarterback? Check

Great receivers? Check

Decent running game? Check

Overpowering defense? Not quite.

The Chargers enter the 2010 season with 5 AFC West titles and 5 playoff appearances in the last 6 seasons, and while the smart money is on same-old, same-old for this year, questions loom over a defense that is suddenly short of playmakers. Antonio Cromartie and his bad attitude were shipped out to the Jets, Jamal Williams was let go, Luis Castillo and Shaun Phillips are both on the back nine, and Shawne Merriman hasn’t shown that he has come close to recovering from knee surgery a few years ago.

SD was 16th in the league in yards allowed last season, so any more leakage could cause some serious problems and put more pressure on the offense.

The offense, of course, begins and ends with Philip Rivers, who piles up huge numbers every season but  can’t seem to crack the elite Manning-Brady Combine because of playoff flops. Rivers threw two interceptions at home in last season’s 17-14 loss to the Jets in the playoffs, dulling the polish on an otherwise excellent regular season in which he led the Chargers to 11 straight wins and was at times the best QB on the planet.

The Chargers’ biggest off-season move was dumping running back LaDainian Tomlinson and turning the ball-carrying responsibilities over to Darren Sproles and overall No. 12 draft pick Ryan Matthews.

Tomlinson’s 24 yards gained in 12 carries in the loss to the Jets ended any doubt that LT was cooked.

Matthews and Sproles should be an upgrade, and the offense should have no trouble moving the chains. Wideout Vincent Jackson will miss the first three games due to a suspension, so the early looks will go to Malcolm Floyd and Antonio Gates. Bills refugee Josh Reed is also in the WR mix.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – You can’t beat somebody with nobody, but the division should tighten a bit this season. Oakland finally has a legit quarterback (Jason Campbell), Kansas City appears serious and the Broncos should be in the mix if the players don’t revolt against Josh McDaniels.

San Diego seems content to get to the playoffs and take its chances, but unwilling to make moves that enable the team to breathe the same air as Indianapolis and New England.

Next Up: Kansas City Chiefs
