Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 10-6 SU, 9-7 ATS
Projection this season – 8-8 (second in NFC West)

The Cardinals knew this moment would be coming, and now the dominant team in the NFC West turns its offense over to a party boy who has personal issues and who twice has had his season ended by injuries.

Can Matt Leinart be a reasonable facsimile of Kurt Warner?

If the answer to that question is yes, then the Cardinals will probably be able hold off San Francisco and Seattle in the NFC West.

Leinart, who has been around since 2006, last held the starting job in preseason 2008, when he threw three interceptions in an exhibition and the Cards turned things over to Kurt Warner. The problem is that Leinart thinks he’s Joe Namath but really has Seneca Wallace talent.

If Leinart falls on his face, the blame will be in the mirror because things are set up nicely for him. The Seahawks are just figuring things out with a new coach, the 49ers are good but not great, and the Cardinals still have plenty of playmakers around him. If Leinart can accept being a game manager, he can ride the tide. If he tries to channel his inner Brett Favre from Game 1, there is not enough valium to calm down coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Besides breaking in a new QB starter, Whisenhunt will have to deal with the loss of linebacker Karlos Dansby, wide receiver Anquan Boldin and safety Antrel Rolle, all of who were let go for financial reasons and all of whom were key pieces in the Cards’ two straight NFC West title teams.

Boldin’s loss will no doubt bring even more defensive scrutiny on acrobatic WR Larry Fitzgerald, and also more touches for last year’s No. 3 wideout, Steve Breaston.

Every year the Cardinals make noise about a more balanced attack, but the uncertain QB situation and the emergence of RB Beanie Wells could mean that they might be serious about running the ball this season.

Wells averaged 4.5 yards a carry last season, and this year should get well north of his 2009 total of 176 carries.

Veteran linebacker Joey Porter and safety Kerry Rhodes were brought in to plug holes in a defense that wasn’t all that bad last season, but overall the defense appears to have taken a step back along with the offense.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – In the NFC West there is no reason to panic.

Breaking in Leinart is a lot easier when the other three QBs in the division are either old and banged up (Matt Hasselbeck), in the same boat as Leinart (Alex Smith) or a rookie (Sam Bradford).
