Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 5-11 SU, 10-6 ATS
Projection this season – 4-10 (fourth in AFC North)

The 2009 Cleveland Browns were like the hack golfer who kicks it around for 16 holes, then pars 17 and birdies 18. The beer tastes just a little better in the clubhouse, even if he’s still staring at a scorecard that reads 104.

The Brownies finished up last season with four straight wins (Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Oakland and Jacksonville) after a 1-11 start, and while the strong finish did nothing to prevent another last-place showing in the division, it did provide a little more oxygen for coach Eric Mangini.

The good news in Cleveland is that Mangini will no longer have the final say on personnel matters, Mike Holmgren now being the front office boss. That’s actually a very good thing, because the dogs that Mangini brought in were dead last in team offense last season and second-to-last in team defense.

Mangini is free now to just coach, and while he is no Chuck Noll, he’s better at that than he is at playing general manager.

If the Browns are starting over (again) with young players, they are doing it in a curious way. After trading away a No. 1 draft pick in 2007 to draft Brady Quinn, the Browns sent both Quinn and Derek Anderson packing this past offseason and brought in 35-year-old interception artist Jake Delhomme.

Since Quinn and Anderson had higher QB ratings than Delhomme did last season, you wonder exactly what the Browns have in mind.

Cleveland has few playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. Jerome Harrison takes over from Jamal Lewis as the featured back, Mohammed Massaquoi (34 catches in ’09) is the top wideout, and underachieving tight end Ben Watson comes in from New England. Nose tackle Shaun Rogers was the team’s best defensive player for a few years, but was hurt last season and the airport gun incident doesn’t help. He could be replaced by Ahtyba Rubin.

The 3-4 front 7 is a decent group, but the secondary is atrocious.

The team’s strength is it special teams, assuming returner Joshua Cribbs stays healthy.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – Pretty much same old, same old. It’s hard to see the Browns making any headway in the division, and how in the world are they going to survive an early-season 7-game death march in which they play, in order, at Baltimore, Cincinnati, Atlanta, at Pittsburgh, at New Orleans, New England, and the Jets?

If they are still above water (4-5 or better) on Nov. 15, we’ll talk again.

Next Up: Tampa Bay Bucs
