Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 8-8 SU, 9-7 ATS
Projection this season – 8-8 (second in AFC West)

Say what you want about Josh McDaniels – he’s going to succeed or fail doing it his way. In one year he has run off his best two offensive players and gambled his future by drafting a quarterback who just about everyone in pro football figure will be out of the league in a few years.

Like sitting down at the blackjack table and wagering your entire bankroll on the first hand.

In Denver there are suspicions about McDaniels, whose Broncos flamed out (two wins in the final 10 games) after starting the season 6-0.

The cherry on the sundae was team’s holiday present to fans — a 44-24 loss to Kansas City at home in the season finale in which Denver’s defense and offense fell apart in the second half.

Burning his first-round pick on Tim Tebow will either cement McDaniels’s reputation as an innovator or doom him to a career as a coordinator.

Tebow will spend his rookie season trying to work on those pesky mechanics while QB starter Kyle Orton tries to fend off Brady Quinn for the No. 1 job, but Tebow will get his shot – probably in year two.

With attention focused on Tebow, the real concern will be on a defense that gave up only 10 points a game in the first six games last season and nearly 26 per over the final 10. Denver’s collapse last season can be traced to an undersized front line, and the Broncs have scrapped both defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and his 4-3 alignment in favor of a 3-4.

That should help linebacker Elvis Dumervil (the NFL sack leader in 2009) and the team’s terrific secondary.

There are also offensive changes. Gone is the team’s legendary zone blocking scheme in favor of big O-linemen, and without Marshall to stretch defenses, Orton (or Quinn) will make a living with short and intermediate passes to the likes of Jabar Gaffney, Eddie Royal and Brandon Stockley.

Tony Sheffler, another talented malcontent, was given a one-way ticket to Detroit, opening the door for more passes to veteran tight end Daniel Graham.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – Like maybe a dozen to 18 other teams, the Broncos appear to have a decent shot at a wild card spot.

The AFC West matches up vs. the NFC West this season, so the schedule is not too taxing. A real concern could be the lack of playmakers on offense.

Next Up: Cleveland Browns
