Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 10-6 SU, 7-9 ATS
Projection this season – 7-9 (third in AFC North)

While almost every team in the NFL has opened up its offense to take advantage of rules which make it difficult, if not at times impossible, to cover wideouts and slot receivers, the Cincinnati Bengals turned a 180 last season and had success running the football.

With Carson Palmer in an apparent fade pattern and Chad Ochocinco ineffective stretching the field, Cedric Benson became the Bengals’ most effective running back since Corey Dillon.

The end result was pretty damn good – a 10-6 record that was fueled by a 6-0 mark in the division, AFC North championship and a playoff berth.

Now the Bengals seem intent on remaking themselves, at least a bit, as they try to maintain their dominance in a division that includes the Ravens, everyone’s chic pick to get to the Super Bowl out of the AFC.

Marvin Lewis enters his 8th season as coach, and figures that if there is going to be a 9th, the team will have to regenerate its passing game. Palmer ranked 16th in the league with an 83.6 passer rating last season, and the Bengals have added a few more arrows for his quiver – signing free agent wideout Antonio Bryant to take some pressure off Ochocinco, and adding highly touted tight end Jermaine Gresham in the draft.

The move to a more pass-oriented offense may be evidence that the Bengals don’t fully trust Cedric Benson, who has never been known to turn down a drink and has had a slew of off-field incidents, some of which have included police and nightclub bouncers. The most recent occurred in late June, and while many Bengals players have a history of brushes with the law, Benson’s latest indiscretion, in June in Texas, surely got their attention.

Defensively the Bengals have the talent to hang with the Steelers and Ravens in the North. Dhani Jones, who has led the team in tackles for two straight seasons, is one of the best linebackers in the business, and the secondary is solid.

The pass rush should be strengthened by the return of end Antwan Odom, who had 8 sacks before suffering a season-ending Achilles tendon tear last year.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – The schedule could eat this team alive this season. The Bengals open in New England, where the Patriots are re-loaded and coming off an 8-0 record at home in 2009.

Then the Ravens come to Cincinnati in Week 2. Nasty stuff. They also have road trips to Indianapolis and New York (Jets).

Next Up: Buffalo Bills
