Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Season Over/Under Win Total Betting Odds From beted.com – 9

It’s simple math: Zero pass rush plus lousy secondary equals one firing of a defensive coordinator.

So after leading the NFL in scoring last season and finishing last in the NFC South, the Saints tapped Gary Gibbs on the shoulder and showed him the door. Gregg Williams is the defense’s new boss, and he brings with him a good reputation and a desire to make the Saints more aggressive on the other side of the ball.

If the defense isn’t better, at least it will be different. Darren Sharper and Jabari Greer were imported to bolster the secondary, and the Saints used a first-round pick on cornerback Malcolm Jenkins. Defensive end Paul Spicer will add depth. betED Offensively, all the usual suspects return from a team that led the NFL in yards gained and points scored.

Drew Brees will throw the ball all over the field and TE Jeremy Shockey will get injured and say stupid things. That much we know. What we don’t know is whether Reggie Bush will ever become the All-Pro we all thought he’d be.

Keep an eye on Pierre Thomas, who has averaged 4.8 yards rushing over the past two seasons and could be in for a breakout season.

Surprising stat: New Orleans gained 410.7 yards per game last season, which is less than one yard less than the Patriots gained in 2007. The Pats were undefeated that year, while the Saints went 8-8 last season.

Team strengths: Barring injuries, there appears to be no reason the Saints can’t come close to duplicating their offensive success of last season. Brees will move the chains. The schedule sets up nicely, too –– the only late-season game in the north is Dec. 6, at Washington. Most of the schedule will be played in warm weather and/or on artificial turf.

Team Weakness: The Saints have to get better play out of their linebackers. Jonathan Vilma is a top-flight LB, but there are problems elsewhere. Stanley Amoux was a high draft pick out of Wake Forest, but tore an Achilles tendon in practice and is out for the year. NO also gives up way too many points in division games (almost 28 last season).

The Saints will be a factor in the NFC South this season as that division is up for grabs. They have as much talent as anyone, especially on offense. Their problem has been developing the consistency to win on a week in week out basis.

The Saints led the league in scoring a season ago and will once again have a dynamic offense, with the best chance at winning the NFC South. Veteran QB Drew Brees is coming off a remarkable season in which he threw for over 5,000 yards. The Saints will once again have an explosive air assault with Jeremy Shockey, Marques Colston, and Devery Henderson as targets for Brees. RB Reggie Bush will have a big impact, both running and catching the ball. The Saints have bolstered their defense with off-season acquisitions at nearly every position. Middle linebacker Jonathon Vilma showed the team thanks for giving him a nice five-year deal by getting 151 tackles and forcing two turnovers in 2008. LB Scott Fujita will return on the strong side and veteran Dan Morgan is looking for one more chance to show he can still play in the NFL. The Saints have all the ingredients to win the division with an 11-5 record.
