The Redskins never seem to equal the sum of their parts. The talent is there, but something always happens. Last season they started 6-2 and were a shoo-in for the playoffs before they fell apart. The signature loss was a Week Fifteen 20-13 ball-crusher at Cincinnati, but by then the Skins were reeling anyway.
After finishing at 8-8 and out of the money, the Skins responded the only way they know how – by throwing money at the best free agent available. In this case it’s DT Albert Haynesworth, a Class A troublemaker who was relatively trouble-free in Tennessee last year while he was playing for a big contract.
If Haynesworth makes an effort, the Redskins defense will be above average. The problem is on the other side of the ball. Washington scored two touchdowns in a game only twice after Halloween. Jason Campbell adapted well to coach Jim Zorn’s no-turnover passing game, but Campbell can’t stretch the field. Knowing that, the Redskins devoted much of the off-season to trying to get his replacement.
Trading for Jay Cutler didn’t work out when they were beaten to the punch by the Bears; and Washington never could figure out a way to move up in the draft to get Mark Sanchez.
So if you can’t be with the one you love, lose the one you’re with – for another season it’s Campbell.
Team strengths: Clinton Portis is a Top-5 running back, and he makes Campbell a little better than he really is.
Team Weakness: Daniel Snyder is the prototype rich, meddling owner who treats the Redskins like a Fantasy League team. Haynesworth is a low-character guy who will drop off several notches now that he has his money.

The biggest question mark in my mind is Jason Campbell’s ability to be a big time quarterback in this league. I think he has some talent, but I do not think he has what it takes to win championships.
