As new coach Steve Spanuolo surveys the Rams roster, he must be shaking his head. St. Louis earned every one of those losses last season, and the 2-12 record in the worst division in the NFC has fans in eastern Missouri climbing the walls.

Spagnuolo earned his stripes as a defensive genius (he orchestrated the D that knocked off New England in the Super Bowl in 2008), and he promises an attacking defense to replace the one that gave up more points than any other team except the Lions.

betED It’s likely the Rams will spend the rest of the summer scouring the waiver wire to keep the defense competitive until they can get a few more draft under their belts.

St. Louis used the No. 2 overall draft pick on Baylor OT Jason Smith, who’ll replace the departed Orlando Pace. Smith job is to protect whatever is left of Marc Bulger’s career, and open up a few holes for lead back Stephen Jackson until the Rams transition to the two-back system that many teams are now employing.

As if Spagnuolo doesn’t haven’t enough to worry about, the team is for sale and there are rumors that the NFL would have no problem if a West Coast buyer emerges and tries to move the franchise to Los Angeles.

Surprising stat: Orlando Pace was one of the best left tackles in the league, but Rams QBs were still sacked a total of 97 times over the past two seasons.

Team strengths: Low expectations. This franchise hasn’t had a winning season since it won the West in 2003, and fans would sign right now for .500. It doesn’t hurt to play in the talent-challenged NFC West. Jackson is an elite RB, but he’s starting to show some wear and tear.

Team Weakness: They don’t score enough to cover up defensive deficiencies, and their defense doesn’t give the offense the ball in decent field position. There are not a lot of playmakers on a roster that has produced only 5 wins total in the past two seasons.

The Rams are the worst team in the NFC’s worst division. I guess somebody has to be last. The expectations for the Rams is so they, that they could actually go out and win some games they shouldn’t. I still do not think they win more than 5.
