2009 Pro Bowl Preview – Betting Picks + Odds

We preview from a betting perspective the 2009 NFL Pro Bowl. The end to the 2008-2009 betting season in NFL football. We hate it when the season comes to an end…

NFL Pro Bowl – Last Chance for NFL Fans

The last chance to bet on football until next season arrives on Sunday, as the NFL betting schedule concludes with the Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

One important thing to note: Just because you bet on the Pro Bowl doesn’t mean you have to watch it. Although, if you do get stuck watching what is usually the most boring football game of the season the chance to make some cash should add a little excitement to the over-hyped exhibition.

A quick recap for anyone who forgets last year’s Pro Bowl, which is probably almost everyone. Last season the NFC defeated the AFC 42-20. Adrian Peterson picked up MVP honors after rushing for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 16 carries. The win by the NFC kept alive a trend that has been ongoing for several seasons: The Pro Bowl loser has been going on to win the following year. The NFC lost in 2007, the AFC lost in 2006, etc. all the way back to 2003. The last time a conference repeated as Pro Bowl winners was in 2002 and 2003 when the AFC won both times. If the AFC keeps the trend alive this season they’ll do it as an underdog, as the NFC is a 2.5-point favorite on the NFL odds.

Thanks to fan voting this year’s Pro Bowl roster once again includes the usual worthy – and a few unworthy – players. The AFC starters will be led by former Pro Bowl MVP Peyton Manning. Thomas Jones starts at running back, while Le’Ron McClain starts at fullback despite the fact he played more at running back this season. The AFC starting wideouts are the deadly duo of Andre Johnson and Brandon Marshall, while Tony Gonzalez gets another Pro Bowl start at tight end. For real football fans, up front the starting o-liners are Jason Peters and Joe Thomas at tackle, Alan Faneca and Kris Dielman at guard, and Kevin Mawae at center.

In the NFC the Cardinals’ passing attack is a big part of the starting roster with Kurt Warner at QB and Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin at wide receiver. Peterson starts at running back again to try for back-to-back MVP awards, while Mike Sellers is plugged in at fullback and Jason Witten at tight end. The o-liners for the NFC include Jordan Gross and Walter Jones at tackle, Steve Hutchinson and Chris Snee at guard, and Andre Gurode at center.

Defense usually doesn’t matter much in the Pro Bowl, even though Derrick Brooks won the MVP three years ago, so here’s a quick rundown of a few standout defensive starters for both sides. The AFC’s big starters on defense include Mario Williams, Albert Hayesworth, James Harrison, Joey Porter, Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed. The NFC’s big names include Julius Peppers, Justin Tuck, DeMarcus Ware, Patrick Willis, and Charles Woodson.

The NFL stars better enjoy the Hawaii weather this year because it could be the last time the Pro Bowl will be played there. Starting next season the Pro Bowl will be played in the same venue as the Super Bowl, the week before the big game. Next year that is in Miami, so at least they’ll still get some sun.
