What happened to this franchise?
A few years ago they were kicking hiney in the AFC South. They had a solid QB in Byron Leftwich, the O and D lines were top-5 in the league, and coach Jack Del Rio had the support of the organization and the city.
Now the Jags are in rebuilding mode. Veteran RB Fred Taylor was let go after he refused to retire, Leftwich is long gone, management has had to prune away several trouble-makers, and both lines will be stacked with new players.
A year ago the Jags underestimated the loss of defensive tackle Marcus Stroud, and John Henderson’s decline has only worsened the problems. Jacksonville fell to the bottom of the AFC South last season, and with Indianapolis and Tennessee well-stocked and Houston on the rise, there’s not much oxygen left for the Jags.
To make things worse, J-Ville doesn’t appear ready to go completely into rebuilding mode. Vets like Taylor and Ed Peterson were let go, but management brought in a few retreads (WR Torry Holt, OL Tra Thomas) who will take playing time away from an expected crop of about 12 rookies who figure to make the team.
Surprising stat: Jacksonville gave up 269 points in 2005, but has allowed successively more in each year since then – 274 in 2006, 304 in 2007 and 367 last season.
Team strengths: Maurice Jones-Drew? OK, but Jim Brown was the only ball-carrier who was effective behind a mediocre line. One hopeful note – the NFC crossovers are against the NFC West, and right now the Jags are as good as or better than the Rams and 49ers.
Team Weakness: Once a strength, defensive line play deteriorated alarmingly. Until the Jags straighten out that problem, they will be anchored to the bottom of the AFC South.

This team was a Super Bowl contender two years ago and let it all slip away. They could actually finish 4 in their division as they continue on a downward spiral.
