Larry Fitzgerald should put up big numbers again in a division not noted for great secondaries, but no one really knows what will happen with still-ticked-off wideout Anquan Boldin.
Cardinal backers say that the team’s playoff victory in Carolina and decent Super Bowl effort pointed to a defense that wasn’t as bad as it showed during the regular season. We’ll see.
The 2009 defense will be pretty much the same as last year’s, though run-stuffing DE Antonio Smith will be missed and CB Bryant McFadden was signed away from Pittsburgh.
The secondary is good, but is under constant siege because the D-line and linebackers are just average.
Surprising stat: If you like to bet on NFL Preseason Football, the Cards have covered the over 7 of 8 times over the past two seasons.
Team strengths: The offense, obviously. But look at the schedule, which seems to set up nicely. The only tough game (Indianapolis) in the early going will be at home, the home stretch (San Francisco, Detroit, St. Louis, Green Bay) is benign and they won’t play any late-season games in cold weather.
Team Weakness: When you’re the lead RB on a team that is dead last in running ball, it’s time to move on. It wasn’t surprising to see Edgerrin James let go. Using the No. 1 pick on a RB (Wells) was a tad of a stretch for a team that also has defensive troubles. RBs can be had cheap in the middle rounds.

I, like many people expect the Cardinals to fold this season. Not because they are a bad team, rather because of the past history of Super Bowl losers going in the tank the following season.
Coming of the best season in franchise history as NFC Champions the Cards will try to maintain the momentum going into the 2009 season. QB Kurt Warner played excellent last year and will once again solidify his spot among the NFL’s elite. Pro Bowl WR Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin will once again have an explosive season. A newly drafted RB Chris “Beanie” Wells will be a big help to running game that was pitiful a season ago. The Redbirds defense is returning pretty much in tact and Chike Okeafor has been a solid consistent player for Arizona. The secondary will have to be better in the pass coverage. Arizona will finish 10-6 and will repeat as NFC West champions.
