Eric Mangini bears a striking resemblance to a fire hydrant. Here’s guessing that Cleveland fans will be lifting their legs on him by mid-season. Mangini’s hiring was a head-scratcher, but he’s the guy now and must deal with a Rubic Cube of problems:

  • Who is the quarterback? The Brady Quinn-Derek Anderson battle enters its third season. Quinn just can’t seem to shake Anderson.
  • Can the Brownies figure out how to make a first down or two? This team scored zero (as in 0) offensive touchdowns, and only 31 total points, in the final 6 games of 2008.
  • Trouble-making TE Kellen Winslow is gone, but troublesome WR Braylon Edwards is still around. (exported to Atlanta).

If the Browns hope to make any headway in the AFC North, they have to start moving the ball and keep the defense off the field. New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan (moving over from Oakland) promises an aggressive, attacking defense, which will be led by nose tackle Shaun Rogers and LB D’Qwell Jackson. Tops of the honey-do list is applying more QB pressure – Cleveland was third-worst in the NFL with only 18 sacks last season.

Surprising stat: Last season Braylon Edwards led the NFL in dropped passes, with 16.

Team strengths: D’Qwell Jackson led the NFL in tackles last season, with 96. Not bad for a guy considered too slow coming out of college in 2006. There aren’t many nose tackles effective game after game as Rogers is. Placekicker Phil Dawson basically was 100 percent of the Browns offense from Thanksgiving on in 2008.

Team Weakness: Mangini is a defensive guy, and this offense needs re-tooling. Cleveland is invested in two QBs, and the sooner they decide on one, the better.

Cassel will be hard-pressed to match the 21 points a game that the Chiefs offense produced after Week 6 last season.

Cleveland has really done nothing to try and reverse their dismal performance the past few seasons. Hiring a coach who has no track record of winning on a consistent basis was not a step in the right direction. Sorry Browns fans but your team is bringing up the rear this year in the AFC North.
