It’s been so long since Pittsburgh’s Kimo von Oelhoffen rolled Carson Palmer’s knee and tore the QB’s ligaments in that 2005 playoff game, it’s difficult to recall that the Bengals weren’t half-bad even a few years ago.

After that loss Cincy treaded water for a few years (8-8, 7-9) before things fell apart last season (4-11-1).

The playoffs may be out of reach this season, but it’s not too much of a stretch for the Bengals to make a run at .500, or even 9-7. While there is still a hoodlum element to the team, they seem to be making the right moves.

There are several newcomers to keep an eye on. Top draft choice Andre Smith has the potential to be a 10-year starter at tackle, and no one can figure out how linebacker Ray Maualuga fell to the Bengals in the second round. WR Lavernues Coles is a solid sign and gives Palmer another No. 1 option if (when?) Chad Ochocinco goes nutty again. betED Toss in the signings of Cowboys Tank Johnson (DL) and Roy Williams (safety), and the defense could be even better than the one that was ranked 12th in the league last season.

Surprising stat: The Bengals were 0-4 last season in games started by Carson Palmer.

Team strengths: Assuming Palmer is 100 percent, the Bengals should not have trouble moving the chains. Palmer and Ochocinco apparently are simpatico again, and it never hurts when your QB and playmaking WR are on speaking terms.

Team Weakness: Free agent signings aside, there is not a ton of depth and there could be problems when injuries hit. Also, who is running the ball? RB Cedric Benson, another free agent acquisition, is no prize. The Ravens and Steelers figure to win 9 or 10 games each, so that leaves just scraps for the Bengals and Browns in the AFC North.

Cincinnati has done little this off season to try and improve a very poor team. Carson Palmer will be back and healthly and they still have Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson but it will not be enough to avoid another losing season.

The Bengals have a chance to be decent, but there’s a lot of IF’s… I don’t think Baltimore will be that good (yes Flacco is alright, but they have too many questions on offense even though their defense is solid) but Pittsburgh should be the division winner yet again.

Cincinnati could surprise if the defense continues to gel, Coles proves to be an adequate replacement for Housh, and the offensive line can protect Carson. It seems to me that while Carson’s been healthy the running game is just an afterthought because he throws it so well. All Benson has to do is get 15-20 carries per game because you know the Bengals want to air it out 30 plus times per game lol (with Palmer, of course)

Thanks Burr.

You’re right Pitt just has to show up in my opinion to win this division in 09. The only team I can even see mounting a challenge would be the Ravens, but that D isn’t any better than last year, and I’m still not 100% sure about Flacco…so we’ll see.

But for now my $$ is on the Steelers to win the AFC North…again
