Mountain West Football Previews: Wyoming

Head Coach: Dave Christensen
2009 Record: 7-6

Wyoming Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

The 2009 campaign turned out to be a huge success for the Wyoming Cowboys. The offense had all kinds of question marks, but true freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels stepped up and provided the lift the offense needed in the clutch. The Cowboys finished the season by stunning Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl. Can this team continue to move forward this year?

Another year of experience under Christensen’s system should help, but a tougher schedule will make life difficult.

While they were somehow able to finish at 7-6 last year, the numbers didn’t look very good. Wyoming finished last in the league in total offense.

In 2009 it was all about reducing the turnovers, which they did well, but in 2010 they’ll need to gain some more yards as well.

Team Strengths:

The defense as a whole should be quite strong, with seven of their eight leading tacklers from 2009 returning. The pass rush is an area where the Cowboys are particularly strong. Expect this team to continue to put pressure on the quarterback this year.

I think Carta-Samuels has to be seen as a strength this season for the team. The numbers last year were not tremendous, but as a true freshman he proved he can win when it counts.

He is fairly mobile and has a strong arm, so I think he’ll do more damage this season.

Team Weaknesses:

The wide receivers haven’t proven able to get open on a consistent basis, which could make life tough on Carta-Samuels. Some junior college transfers are coming in, which should add depth, but they need some possession receivers that can move the chains consistently.

The rushing defense wasn’t good at all last year, and they lost two of their starting defensive linemen. The front four are too small to stop a strong running game, which will hurt them substantially with their daunting out of conference schedule.

The running game is inconsistent at best, and that will put quite a bit of pressure on Carta-Samuels and the passing game. They need to find some improved depth at the running back position and incorporate Carta-Samuels into the run game.

2010-2011 Wyoming Cowboys Football Predictions: 6-7

It is very possible that this Wyoming football team will actually be better than last year’s version, but not have as good of an overall record. The second and third games of the year are at Texas and home against Boise State. Those teams are just too good for Wyoming at this stage. I expect the offense to improve, but I’m not sure this team will be able to pull out all the close victories they did last season.

The program is still going in the right direction, but I think they’ll finish with a slightly worse record this year.
