CFB Football Previews – N.C. State Wolfpack vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Even with some key offseason departures to the NFL, the Virginia Tech Hokies started their 2011 season in style, routing hapless Appalachian State 66-13. The challenge will increase slightly against East Carolina this week.

It was no Russell Wilson, no problem for N.C State in Week 1. At least, that’s what the 43-21 score suggested. But the road wasn’t as easy as it should have been against Liberty. Now, it’s time to see if the Wolfpack’s offense can impress against an FBS team.

Wake Forest is no juggernaut but should provide a tougher challenge than Liberty did last week.

North Carolina State Wolfpack (1-0)

Despite the lopsided final score, N.C. State labored at times to beat Liberty last week, even trailing after the first quarter. In his first attempt at replacing Russell Wilson, Mike Glennon was ordinary at best, completing 18 of 31 passes for just 156 yards.

At least the Wolfpack’s running game was solid. Curtis Underwood ripped off 114 yards and scored a touchdown on 14 carries; James Washington hit paydirt twice.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (0-1)

Poor Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons seemed poised to open their 2011 campaign with a win over Syracuse, leading 29-14 in the fourth quarter. But the Orange fought all the way back and wound up breaking the Deacs’ hearts with a three unanswered touchdowns to win 36-29 in overtime. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Despite the crushing defeat, Wake Forest had some good takeaways. Tanner Price was excellent, throwing for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Givens caught seven of Prices throws for 170 yards and two scores.

In terms of yardage allowed, Wake Forest’s “D” was also better than expected. Though Ryan Nassib beat them when he had to, he only managed 178 passing yards and Syracuse failed to crack 300 total yards.

CFB Wagering Trends:

Under is 6-2 in NCST last 8 games overall.
Over is 6-2 in NCST last 8 games in September.
NCST are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games overall.
Over is 7-3 in WFRST last 10 home games.
NCST are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 meetings.

The pick:

A few weeks from now, I suspect the more talented Wolfpack will be a much stronger pick. But I’m not so sure right this moment. Glennon has to earn our trust and the Wolfpack have to prove they can handle a conference rival after struggling at times against an FCS school.

Wake Forest isn’t an ACC contender by any means but it’s an experienced team with a quarterback who seems to be in midseason form. I like the Deacs at home.

N.C. State vs Wake Forest prediction: Wake Forest 24, N.C. State 21
