Northwestern has been rather inconsistent, beating Purdue a few weeks ago but losing earlier in the season to Syracuse. Wins over Miami of Ohio and Eastern Michigan were not overly impressive. This is not a very good team running the ball, and last week against Michigan State it was no exception, as they had just 79 yards in 29 attempts.

More and more it’s a matter of Mike Kafka having to do everything himself; against the Spartans, in a game where Northwestern covered in the NCAA betting odds, he was 34 of 47 for 291 yards, and added 42 net yards on the ground.

The question that may be worth asking here is whether Kafka can “break contain” against the speedy and effective Indiana defensive ends Jammie Kirlew and Greg Middleton. That is going to be a major challenge for him, and without “go-to” running backs to keep the defense honest, you may see some three-and-outs that will help IU in the NCAA betting odds.

Indiana scored a win last week against the plundering Illini of Illinois, and did it behind 333 passing yards and three TD’s from QB Ben Chappell, who is making very strong connections these days with Tandon Doss (130 yards last week; 676 on the season). At 4-3, Indiana is still in a position to get bowl-eligible, which would be quite a move forward, and this is a step toward that.

Sure, there’s something of a revenge motive on the part of Northwestern. On their way to a bowl last year, the ‘Cats dropped a 21-19 decision to these Hoosiers in Bloomington, as they turned the ball over FIVE times. Still, Indiana has a quarterback making progress in the newly-installed offense, the more dangerous receivers (aside from Doss, let’s put Damario Belcher in there as well) and we also like the defensive matchup for the Hoosiers here. In terms of technical trends, in every game Northwestern has played that is on the “board,” the underdog has covered. We’re going with Indiana, getting six points in the NCAA betting odds.
