Oklahoma State, which was expected by some to be a contender for the Big 12 title, has not had the kind of season it was hoping for, which is to say that the Cowboys are not undefeated at this point. The opening game brought an emotional high with a 24-10 win over Georgia, which was a big victory in the standing and against the NCAA football odds.

But then OSU had a letdown, which good teams are not supposed to do, and failed to win at home against Houston, providing the Cougars the chance to vault into the national rankings. There have been three wins since, but last week’s game against the very young Aggies of Texas A&M was by far the stiffest challenge.

Along the way there have been road blocks. Kendall Hunter, who had 1555 yards last season, has not played in any of the last three games, as he has been sidelined with a foot injury. Dez Bryant, the All-America receiver who had 1480 yards and 19 touchdowns last year, has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA.

Keith Toston has done a nice job in Hunter’s absence, and he had 130 yards against A&M. Quarterback Zac Robinson threw for 279 yards and two TD’s, and the offensive line has done the job for him, allowing him to be sacked twice all season.

Oklahoma State’s punting units have been in the top ten nationally, and the team is in the top ten in scoring, but there is no escaping the fact that the team can’t possibly be operating with as much efficiency as it was before.

The last three games have been played against teams who didn’t have especially tough stop units (Rice, Grambling, Texas A&M). The question here involves whether Missouri has the kind of defensive strength that can serve as an impediment. Missouri was sailing along with four straight wins, but those came against teams that were very faulty – Illinois, Bowling Green, Nevada and FCS entry Furman.

When encountering Nebraska in the pouring rain at Columbia, quarterback Blaine Gabbert tossed his first two interceptions of the year, but they did hold the Huskers to 263 yards. They had opportunities, but could not get the job done in the red zone. The result was a 15-point loss in the NCAA football odds in what was by far their stiffest test, even though because of the weather, however, that may not have been a good barometer.

Danario Alexander is not someone OSU can ignore. The receiver has 447 yards on 35 receptions and has the capacity to make the big play. Gabbert seems to have taken to his starting role in the spread very well; he’s not as nimble as Chase Daniel before him, but has a good arm and a quick release. He was bothered by an ankle injury against Nebraska, however, and he wasn’t able to get a lot of mustard on most of his throws.

I like the adaptability of Robinson, even having lost some of his weapons. Toston has done a great job, and his production, along with the offensive front, will keep Missouri’s defense honest. Let’s see if the pressure Oklahoma State can bring will upset Gabbert a bit. We’ll lay the points with OSU, the seven-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA football odds.
