Georgia is coming off a brutal loss to Tennessee where Mark Richt’s team got just 13 first downs and allowed the Vols to rack up nearly 500 total yards. The Bulldogs marked the Vols’ first SEC victim this season. The disappointing 45-19 loss moved Georgia to an overall record of 3-3. The Georgia defense seemed to just watch as Vols quarterback Jonathan Crompton completed 20-of-27 passes for more than 300 yards. The Bulldogs’ offense wasn’t much better: Quarterback Joe Cox struggled for most of the night, completing just 19 of his 34 attempts for 146 yards and no touchdowns with two crippling interceptions. The Vols kept the Bulldogs from ever reaching the red zone. Georgia scored once on a kick return, then off a defensive interception, a 52-yard field goal, and a blocked punt for a safety.

Vanderbilt: The Week That Was

With a record of 2-4, the Commodores have had a hard go of it this season. After opening with a shutout win over Western Carolina, Vandy has gone on to lose four of its last five games, three of which have been on the road. Good teams win at home, and this is not a good team. The Commodores are equipped with a quarterback, Larry Smith, who struggles to complete passes. Smith was 11-of-24 last week with two interceptions in a 16-13 loss to a less than stellar Army team in overtime. It was a kicker’s battle for Vandy, which sent the game into overtime on a 41-yard field goal in the final minute of regulation. Army kicker Alex Carlton later drilled a 42-yarder to clinch the victory for the Black Knights. Offensively things never really came together for the Commodores, who are desperately searching for answers after six games.

The Week That Is:

Neither one of these teams is particularly great. Georgia has a 3-3 record while Vanderbilt has been struggling this season at just 2-4 so far. Georgia has played three top-25 teams, while Vandy has played just two. Both teams have had to weather the storm of a challenging non-conference schedule, and will face NCAA powerhouses Georgia Tech and Florida before the season is over. But, how will they fare against each other?

Don’t expect to see a big running game out of either team on Saturday. Georgia has accumulated just under 585 rushing yards. Things aren’t much better in the passing realm for either team, either. Vandy quarterback Larry Smith has thrown for just 846 yards with a completion percentage of 46. As for Georgia, Quarterback Joe Cox has completed 104 passes this season for 1,400 yards.

Expect to see Georgia come out on top in this one. Both clubs are 1-2 on the road, but Vanderbilt is 0-3 in conference, and I don’t see the Commodores emerging with a victory on Saturday.
