Arkansas State has been through a couple of rough ones lately, dropping decisions by a field goal each to both Troy and Iowa. In last week’s game, they may have been catching the Hawkeyes both coming off a win over Penn State and looking ahead to their game with Michigan, but still you have to give ASU all the credit in the world for hanging all the way; after they got off to a 14-0 first quarter deficit they came back to cover in the NCAA football odds.

Senior quarterback Corey Leonard is not a high-percentage passer, but he shows poise, having dished for 66 yards and four TD’s so far while throwing only one errant pass that was picked off. If he had a more consistent running game, he’d be more dangerous. It would certainly help if Reggie Arnold, another senior, who ran for 1074 yards last year, could get back to his 2008 form.

The big weakness for Arkansas State has been in its secondary, which brought back seven members of the two-deep from a year ago but has been burned a little against better competition, allowing 66% completions and eight yards an attempt. There is a certain expectation that ULM junior Troy Revell (7 TD;’s, 4 INT’s), who is in his first year as a full-time starter, is in a position to exploit that. ULM looks to achieve balance by running the football behind Frank Goodin, and he appeared to have broken through with a 163-yard performance against Florida International last week, as Monroe covered in the NCAA football odds.

It could come down to who will control the line of scrimmage. We must say we’re impressed by the way ULM has dealt with the rushing attacks of the likes of Texas and Arizona State, and even though the Redhawks have permitted eleven rushing TD’s, they have allowed only 3.2 yards an attempt. After the opening laugher over Mississippi Valley State, ASU has been outgained by an average of 182 yards a game, and the attack has been limited at best (292 ypg).

In last year’s meeting, ASU had a 23-point lead in the second half, then let Monroe come in through the back door and covered as a 14.5-point underdog. That was the fourth straight cover in the series for the Warhawks. We like that recent history, not to mention the defensive line and the offensive balance ULM possesses. So we aren’t particularly scared to lay a small number with Louisiana-Monroe, the two-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA football odds.
