Wisconsin: The Week That Was

The Wisconsin Badgers rushed for 295 yards, averaging six yards per carry, in their victory over the Gophers of Minnesota, keeping Paul Bunyan’s Axe for a sixth straight year. Badger quarterback Scott Tolzien wasn’t great, going 16-of-26 for 159 yards, but he didn’t need to be.

Tolzien only needed to make a handful of key plays because Wisconsin’s run-heavy offense centered around John Clay, Tolzien’s backfield mate. Clay ran for 184 yards and three scores on 32 carries as the Badgers took control in the second half. The Gophers were unable to get the ground game going against the Badger defense, settling for a paltry 57 yards on 28 attempts while fumbling twice. The win brought Wisconsin far more than just pride and the nation’s oldest rivalry-game trophy; the 31-28 triumph catapulted Wisconsin into the top tier of the Big Ten race alongside Ohio State and Iowa.

Ohio State: The Week That Was

Ohio State rolled over Indiana in a 33-14 victory, marking the 16th straight conference road win for Jim Tressel’s club. The Buckeyes dominated the Hoosiers in time of possession, controlling the ball nearly twice as long (38:43 to 21:17) and gaining 30 first downs to Indiana’s 11. The Buckeye defense gave up its first score in nine quarters on a second-quarter touchdown pass by IU quarterback Ben Chappell, but OSU held the Hoosier ground game to 18 yards. The Hoosiers didn’t help themselves either, committing three turnovers including a bad snap-turned-safety in the third quarter.

Considering that Ohio State has beaten Indiana in 15 straight contests, last week’s game wasn’t a statement win that will propel the Buckeyes back into the national championship race, but the 19-point win did remind everyone why Ohio State has ruled the Big Ten Conference in recent years.

The Week That Is:

Consider this game the in-season Big Ten championship, at least until next week’s Wisconsin-Iowa matchup. Ohio State will get a solid game from quarterback Terrell Pryor, who will burn the Badgers with his arm and legs, but his efforts will fall short. That’s because his defensive teammates will find themselves on the field for much of the afternoon, immersed in a losing battle for time of possession.

The Buckeyes’ defense has been able to stop the run all year, but not even USC could bring a rushing attack like the one the Badgers and Clay will bring on Saturday. Clay will hit the century mark again, and Tolzien will come up with some long-range passes on third down. The Badger defense will play consistently rugged defense – especially in the red zone – to hold off any last minute comeback, in what will be a huge upset for Wisconsin. The day’s events could start another round of finger pointing at the Buckeye braintrust’s play calling. Expect a score along the lines of 21-17, in favor of Wisconsin.
